just went back a few pages of this thread and it reminded me on how flamboyant that 2ndGen character is...until everybody pushed him to jump off a cliff and retire his SN and Cannondale.
May he RIP.
May he RIP.

This thread is all kinds of sad.
Hopefully 2ndGen is out there riding his dream CAAD somewhere, as opposed to setting it up for model shots.

Lot's of amusing commentary. I went on a 400 mile tour in the EU on a rental bike with an adjustable stem. I experimented with bar height and found my lower back really liked having the bars somewhat lower than I had been riding. They tops of the bars are now 10 cm below the top of my saddle. My wife had been having pain in her upper back just below her shoulder blades and we kept trying higher and higher bars to no avail. We went the other way and she's now much happier. Moral of the story is that despite what seems or intuitive or what the supposed conventional wisdom might be, try and see what works the best for you. If it's turns out it's a totally slammed pro look, bonus!

I went to a bike shop seeking a >5mm dust cap, and was told that "they aren't available.... ones that the pros use are milled down on a lathe."
well, that's obviously false. is there any source for these yet?

I bought a ud-carbon dustcap from www.veloflyte.com, not even 2mm tall. It was exactly what I needed when I had the S5, to obtain a fit similar to the S2 I had before.

OK, this is about as slim as theoretically possible. It is basically a CF dust cap. You put metal spacers underneath so it doesn't scrape the head tube. I just got it and put in 65 miles on Sunday. Seams fine but there may be slight concern is that the load from the stem is not spread out upon the inner and outer races of the top head tube bearing. The load goes only onto the inner race only (I think, not 100% sure, need to check metal washer dimensions again). I don't think it's a significant concern either way and it's as thin as you'll ever find. It doesn't seal quite as well as most caps but I will just make sure to keep it well greased for extra protection. Incidentally, the height of the spacer is about how tall the stock FSA cap was before I put on the thin cap.
Finally, I do plan to re-cut the top tube as soon as I'm positive I like it. Want to get a couple more rides in but I'm 99% sure I like it fully slammed.

Yeah, The one pictured above is the standard 20mm spacer available from Campagnolo or several other hdst manufacturers. It's meant to go UNDER the stem, not on top. If you have 20mm of steerer tube sticking out from the top of your stem you should cut the damn thing before you crash and puncture a lung.

I saw the veloflyte - i guess i can be sure it'll fit my S2, but i really want it for my Felt. the HT is about 46mm...i have to get an exact measurement.
I'd prefer to get an official FSA dust cap, but they don't seem to be available.

I stuck one of those slamthatstem dust caps on mine, I've been on a handfull of rides now, I honestly didn't notice too much of a difference. It lowered the stem by roughly 15mm. I'll cut the space on top later if I decide this to be permanent in a month or so.

The most incredible of the pictures is that I had a TT skin suit in that color, the same adidas shoes that pretty much everybody at that time was using and the brancale helmet one of the guys is using in that b/w picture
What a friend of mine that won the junior TTT panam was doing was grabbing a 53 or 52 frame (he was like 6 feet tall) and building his own TT machine with bull horns and stuff, the idea was pretty good and worked at least for him because the sucker for being junior kicked like a mule, next year he was racing in france... 3 seasons and came back really tired of the politics in european teams if you guys know what im talking about.

I know I shouldn't take the bait, but it really is a distorted metric of aesthetic - this whole thing - when the head tube is as long as the fork. Not picking on this one in particular. But, it is like a gentleman with a 48" waist boasting about how he secures his belt on the first hole. A spacer or two - I don't see the big deal. May actually provide for a quicker handling bike. Now, saddle to bar drop on the other hand. That's something that may impress me about the rider's position and posture. Flame me.
