Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just don't see a 1x11 working well on a road bike but love it on my new hardtail Mtb

There's the Fairdale Weekender Dropbar. It is a 1X10 though. Maybe a little more of hybrid/adventure bike.

Curious, why are you afraid of front derailleur?

Buy any bike and replace the crankset with your choice of 1X units or replacement chainrings. Ignore the shift function in your left hand. Enjoy. Or not.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just buy a 1x cyclocross bike and put road tires on it?

That would make a 1X cyclocross bike with slicks. The OP wants a road bike

Road Bike Lines Blurred

Outsider mtb er looking in and learning from the roadies here. Seems to me the "road bike" lines have been blurred by many cross-capable bikes over the last couple years. I'm on a 1x11 Stigmata and moved to a 10×42 cassette and long cage D. Gt Grade and Pivot bikes sure seem like a cross bike pretty well suited for an endurance road bike role....tires limiting factor. I guess it would be very different it someone were to specify road race or TT bike.

Just look for a Gravel 1x. I would suggest the Specialized Diverge Expert 1x, but it has SCS wheels. But I am sure you can find many among Gravel .

I am not afraid. I like the simplicity. I have a 1x11 fitness bike now and I find it no different.

Tell me your opinions.

If I can buy a bike new with just 1x11, I save money and maybe get better gear?

Its strange nobody do this type of road bike except for Specialized.

There is plenty, buy a SRAM equipped bike.

For the rest of us, makes sense to have 50/34 52/36 or 53/39. For the rest of us, font derailleur is not complicated, it's very simple, both in use and maintenance. I find it very peculiar why anyone needs to simplify something that is already stupid simple.

Or you could just buy a Shimano equipped bike, and not worry about a poor shifting front derailleur.

Also not sure why you think it's hard to find 1x11, I see plenty of these adventure bikes with 1x11, for those who think front derailleurs are too complicated.

I find no difference in using a 1x11 gear going uphill vs a 3x9. Both are easy and the same. Then why do I need a front derailleur?

Buy whatever road bike you like, remove chainrings, FD and cable, replace with narrow-wide of your choice. Voila, 1x11.

Problems only begin to arise when the cassette goes past a 32T big cog.

You don't climb very much then. And who rides a 3x9?

Sometimes you run in to steeper hills.

I could probably get away with a 1*11 where I live and how I ride, but the fact of the matter is that an FD isn't adding a lot of cost or complexity or weight to the equation. At the same time, when they work well, they bring a lot of versatility to the table. Such is the added value that you're going to be hard-pressed to find too many options without an FD. If you really want one, you can DIY it, but... why?
