Bar ends

I'd like to put end bars on my bike but I currently have really nice grips that don't seem to accommodate them. There is no end cap on the grips and the other end of the grip has a metal ring around it. I guess if I were to trim them down it would have to be from the end. Thoughts?

yeah was just looking at mine. I'd have to cut the current grips to make room for the bar ends. I think I can also push the shifters toward the stem providing a little more room

The metal ring may be a lock ring. Is there a small hex screw on the underside locking the grip to the handlebar? If so, you can loosen it and slide the grip on and off. In order to use bar ends, you would have to trim out the end of the grip to allow it to slide completely on to the handlebar and expose some of the bar at the end (for the the bar end). Some bar ends take more room than others do. You will likely need to move your shifter and brake levers inboard a little to make room.

Alternatively, you could switch to a grip with an integrated bar end. Ergon is probably the most popular of these (look at the GP3, GP4, and GP5 grips), but there are other knock-offs as well. I have the Ergon GP3 on one of my bikes -- next time I buy grips, I'll look for the GP4s or the GP5s (larger bar end). My other bike has standard Ergon grips with Origin8 Ergo-Sport bar ends. I like those bar ends also. Similar to the old Cane Creek ones you can no longer buy. These need only a half inch or so of exposed bar on the end.

It is a grip lock ring, you should loosen it and the control lever clamps too,
they have to move inboard if you are going to add a regular bar end on the outside end.

Ergon has a combined integrated Grip bar end, the clamping screw is in the outboard end,

It grips the bar holding both the grip and the bar end together, though both are individually adjustable..

those have a more seamless like transition between the grip and bar end..

A rubber mallet, applied to the outboard end of the grip after loosening all clamp screws, will cut a very neat hole in the end of that rubber grip. I really love the Specialized P2Barendz, after trying many, many different brands and models.

Great Idea.
I used an exacto knife to cut my way through
