Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pedals and knee pain

I have slightly pronated feet. They point inwards a little. I suspect this to be one of the causes of my recent knee pain. I have two bikes : my commuter, with SPD pedals (no float) and my roadie, with Look pedals with 9 degrees of float. The pain seems to come from using the SPD pedals, but I'm not sure. I put over 5000km on my commuter last year, completed a few centuries on it, and never felt pain in my knees. Mind you, the pain is very slight; it's not even precise enough for me to say exactly where I feel it. What should I do? Is there a way to have float with SPD pedals? Look pedals on my commuter would not be very practical, because I can't walk with road shoes. Thanks.

Hi. Which cleats do you have? They come in two varieties, red with no float, and yellow with float.

Knee pain is a good prediction of future injury.

These work well for some people: https://www.lemondfitness.com/products/lewedge/
Installation is not real easy. I recommend help from a good pro fitter.

Every time I use SPDs I get anterior knee pain. When I switch back to Speedplay Frogs, which have unlimited float, the knee pain completely disappears.

Speedplay. I have Eggbeaters on my cross bikes. They're OK too when the cleats wear out a bit.
I believe the float is told to be around 6 deg, but they don't release before 15-20 deg.
