I do that often too, depending on how long I expect the traffic to have to wait or whether it would be possible for me to re-merge into traffic, etc. But again, if the two bicyclists decide to pull over, it is just as easy to do so riding two abreast as it is two single file.

In this case there is nowhere to pull off, no shoulder and no flat ground.

Don't get me wrong, in this case the car driver was a horses derriere, and in my opinion totally at fault. No excuse for his actions. He deserves prosecution to the fullest extent allowable by law.
I suspect he won't get off easy after the court reviews the video.

Going back to the original thread story, according to this news article from five days ago, the driver (Marshall Grant Neely III) will change his plea from not guilty to guilty.

From the article:
"If convicted of the federal charges, Neely could face prison time. He could spent from 2 to 12 years in prison on the reckless aggravated assault charge; up to 5 years in prison for lying to a federal agent; and up to 20 years in prison for obstructing justice"

There's no excuse for his actions, what he did was clearly at fault and deserves punishment. Glad to hear the plea was changed.

I'm betting he did that under advice from his attorney who most likely told him if he fought against the overwhelming evidence of guilt, his punishment would be a lot harsher.

Even if there is a sightline far enough ahead. Passing on narrow road is not exactly a smart move.

I know the sentence he got is a disgrace.

At least he had to admit guilt to assault with a deadly weapon. I'm waiting to see his apology during sentencing.

To bring this to a close

He got 10 months jail and is facing a $1.5M civil law suit

https://www.tennessean.com/story/new...ng/1190603002/

What's bizzare is that people get far less for killing someone. I think the difference here is that he left the scene and then lied to police.

Thank God for the cameras.

Something I did not see (or missed?) is that hopefully he will never be able to drive or own a vehicle again. His actions are despicable and appears to have no regard for human life, the bicyclist was so lucky to not have been killed or injured worse, hopfully he gets everything he can get on his civil lawsuit.

We need to have examples set because these types of motorists are becoming more and more common. I have had my share of incidents and the police seem to not help matters much and the perpetrators continue with their dangerous behavior toward cyclists (and myself.)

Thanks for the update, I was wondering what happened. He will make new friends in the lockup, hopefully it's prison and not jail.

You mean, upon his release he might be in the market for a...bicycle? Oh, the irony!

Make him ride a unicycle, for the rest of his days. He's not fit for two wheels.

In my opinion that is the very best punishment in so many circumstances.
