40 miles and 5 incidents......

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

40 miles and 5 incidents......

Had a "nice" ride today, I thought I would share with you folks:

In the span of my favorite 40 mile loop, I had 5 memorable incidents.

1. A guy in a late model duel axle Ford pickup deliberately misses me by mere inches at 70+ MPH on a bridge, nice and wide, lots of room and no oncoming traffic. Saw him swerve over to me in my mirror..... how nice

2. Had a guy in an old 197ish datsun pickup pull up along side me and cuss me out and threaten me for "being in the road"..... said I deserve to die for being a dumba**

3. Had someone trying to pass me in a car with oncoming traffic. The car coming toward us decided to steer their car to the middle of the road to make it deliberately tighter than it was already going to be, all the while blowing their horn non-stop

4. Had a bull terrier run into the road perpendicular to me and attempt to bit/attack..... with the owners watched from their front yard. I swerved left (not on purpose) but to keep from being crashed by the dog. An oncoming SUV had to lock up their brakes and swerve into the other lane (where I had previously been) to avoid hitting me head on.

5. While I was on the side of the road lecturing the dog owners about keeping their animals under control, a logging truck came along and purposely gave me zero room as he passed at a high rate of speed.

Can't wait to ride tomorrow............. LOL

Remind me never to ride wherever it is you ride...

where would that be exactly so I can make a note? And can you explain #4 a little better? I'm not sure I quite get it.

You should've smacked that dog with your pump. Or your guads.

all of these stories really surprise me....I have been riding for over 2 years now and not once have I had anything thrown at me, anything yelled at me, anyone threaten me, anyone swerve at me in their car, or a dog even make a move towards me.....I once had a rattlesnake cross the road in front of me, but I'm not sure that counts...and believe me, the pickups certainly outnumber cars in this area...just lucky I guess

oh yeah, sometimes the cows have looked at me menacingly.

With respect to number 4......

I was riding down a rural two lane road, and approached a house on the right (my side). I saw people in the front yard who appeared to just standing there talking. As I got almost even with them, their dog came running full speed toward me and acted like it was going to lunge and or jump onto me. I swerved into the left lane to avoid contact with the dog, but this was not a good move on my part because an SUV was coming fast in that lane. The SUV driver no doubt saw me and the dog almost tangled up and swerved his vehicle into what was the left lane for him. The dog owners saw the entire episode and did not do anything to help control the situation.

my advice would be to get some mace, chase the truck down and find him at the next light. he won't be ready, but he will enjoy a face full of retribution

or maybe just down an extra beer tonight and forget about the whole thing while you are mapping out a new bike route!

Central North Carolina.......

As far as I am concerned, it's like living in the wild west days here....... pretty much open season on cyclists. Heck we have had about 10 bikers run over and or killed here just this summer (no I am not kidding)

Hummm... Charlotte area???

I've been in NW NC for almost a year and have not had a single incident. No one even yelling/blowing the horn. My only problem has been dogs, but dogs will be dogs.

Aww ****. I live in Raleigh, and I just bought my first road bike to start riding. Bad timing apparently...

Oh well, Fred or not I've got my mirror, maybe I can break it in half and stab the dogs (or rednecks) with the sharp part.

And did you read the comments on some of those?? I only got through the first one so far, but I'm already pissed off. These drivers act like we're trying to piss them off, and that it's a game we're playing where they try to kill us in order to not make them one minute late.

LOL..... thats the spirit!

I love cycling and despite the people out there who behave so poorly, I refuse to abandon the sport. I will hopefully continue to live and learn from the things that happen to me.

It is truly dangerous around here however, So please be careful and expect the unexpected

I wouldn't ride a road bike alone. I'd probably take up MTBing. And I'd carry "protection" while out on the trails. No Deliverance remake for me.

Damn! I've never ridden there, but I have friends I visit in Cary (real close to Apex, I think, they were in Raleigh). Some nice wide streets, lots of trees -- I hope you find a safer route.

I think you aren't wearing enough black. Seriously, I only get honks or yells when I'm wearing a color. Apparently my black jersey has a subliminal message of "I will kick the **** out of you if you even get close to me." I like it.

If you already wear black, move.

Living where you do, what exactly do you find enjoyable about riding a bike? Sounds like a nightmare.
