Wow...and to think I've contemplated moving to NC at some point in my life. Love the state, and have heard of the endless traffic accidents involving car vs car...but man...car vs cyclist is scary bad! That area up there is really nice too. Chapel Hill was one of my favorite places to visit.

I wish this thread and others like it could be moved to the "Advocacy and Safety" forum. I already know to never go into that forum because I'll either get really p***ed or scared to death. This kind of stuff makes me want to hide under my bed.

Just wear all red, They will think your a banger and leave you alone because you packing. Raleigh Durham is a weird area. Cary has a ton of cyclist, money and Northeners. The rest is a mix of college kids, Tech sector workers, and orginal locals, and it switches so quickly. Lived there for a year and never had problems.

Ya know, fashion tastes aside, it seems that every once in a while it's 'kill and buzz the cyclist day'. I've gotten to the point where my attitude is pretty much STFU and hit me already.

It seems to go in phases too. I went weeks with no incidents at all. But nowdays I call an incident anything that can cause me harm. An idioit on a horn is not even an inicident. Now probably weekly someone swerves toward me or crowds me intentionally. Longer I commute the more desenseitized I become to the dumasses. Sounds like the OP had about a years worth in a day.

I live in NC as well, and I thought that was just part of riding and that everyone on this forum had balls of steel. It's a little worrisome to see that this is a local problem. And all you guys telling the OP to move, that is truly asinine. A recreational rider is not going to move to another part of the country so that he can use better roads. Asinine I say.
Good day.

It just amazes me when drivers buzz you and come really close as they pass, especially when there isn't a car in the oncoming lane. I have this dream that one day I'll become U.S. president and make it a law that before you apply for a driver's license you have to spend two weeks commuting by bicycle Oh, what a dream...
OP: wow, that does not sound like a fun ride. Glad you came away in one piece.
I'm summering in Durham, NC. I ride daily and aside from one incident, nothing has happened beyond the buzz too close or just the careless driver. I guess it is just bad luck for some other riders. I'm not even going to look at those links to news stories...I'd rather just ride defensively and keep my fingers crossed.

From story 2:
"Judge Don Stephens sentenced Reid to 36 months' probation and 400 hours of community service, which includes 100 appearances at high schools in Wake or Alamance counties to talk about the dangers of drunk driving."
And then: "During the probation period, Reid cannot drive or drink. If he does, he will face jail time."
So, 3 years no car and no alcohol. IF he trained right, he could be a hell of a cyclist.

Jeez ... I remember the good ol' days when I used to live in western Wisconsin, about an hour west of Saint Paul, MN. Some Sunday mornings I could do 25 - 30 miles and see less than a dozen cars, and not a one of the drivers drunk (of course, it was morning).

Seriously; I had fewer incidents when I started wearing RW&B USA jerseys. The rednecks seem to respect the patriotic implications.

That's what it's all about. Just keep riding...next time, ride faster through those crazy sections to avoid more BS.

The legal question (for the finder(s) of fact) will be whether a reasonable person would think you were representing yourself as a police officer. If the answer is yes, you ill likely be convicted (assuming you were charged) with impersonating.

Police saw a biker wearing that, I don't think it'd be the jury you'd have to worry about.
