Help identifying "Talbot", the one that got away...
hello, i recently had the opportunity to buy this "Talbot" labelled bike. unfortunately i had a momentary lapse of judgement, waffled, and a few hours later when i had come to my senses, it had already sold.
i am aware of our local Talbot history here in Vancouver, though haven't seen many in person. also aware of other Talbot bike brands as well.
i am hopeful to tap the Forum's well of expertise and knowledge to ID this frame. i don't have many details about the bike other than these few photos. it was equipped with a Suntour Superbe Pro/Cyclone gruppo with mismatched wheels and very lightweight. frame and fork sported a homemade paint job and while it highlighted its cursive lug work definitely didn't do it justice.
and yes, i'm still kicking myself for not snapping it up at the pittance the seller was wiling to part with it for. the seller posted that is was in 8 out of 10 condition with brakes that weren't adjusted, no chain, and no front derailleur cable and the rear wrapped around chainstay. i guess much like everything else, condition ratings are subjective (to say the least).
any insight and info would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Talbot is a brand name owned by Cycles Peugeot and it was used in the French market fairly extensively with parallel offerings to the Peugeot line. Although I believe they used Prugnat lugs on occasion, the Campy dropouts are atypical. It is likely to be a vanity re-label over a home made paint job. The BB numbers could be a serial but might also be lug socket degree specs like you sometimes see on Nervex Pro fancy BBs.

definitely agree...a terrible home paint job doing a disservice to those lugs!

Looking at the bike again, I think the Vancouver produced bike is most likely. Peugeot/Talbot used flat plate stay caps and those shallow concave ones lead me to think it's domestic Canadian production.

lug pattern Prugnat 62/s
bottom bracket shell BOCAMA
there are or were at least two retail bike shops in the U.S. with the Talbot name
house branding might be a possibility, not making an assertion
hope we get more information on the Vancouver Talbot maker

My research turned up 3 Talbots, an Eastern US, a British and this Vancouver maker who made a lot of custom/bespoke frames. Very nice in spite of cedar shingle BG.

Fine detective work!
There was also a Talbot's Bicycles in California in the city of San Mateo, in the San Francisco Bay Area. IIRC they closed around the late 1980's. Never heard tell of them offering a house brand however.

I found this thread because they appear to have had a house brand:

Talbots Toyland, later Talbots Cyclery, was the DeRosa dealer for the area when I was drooling over such bikes in the early seventies.
The green bike in the craigslist add does indeed sport their logo. It looks to me like one of the second tier Japanese bikes that were available in the early/mid seventies that were marketed under a number of different brandings. At the time I worked at a bike shop in Palo Alto selling "Kobe" branded bicycles of similar construction.
