1st gen Deore derailleur?

Has anyone made this work with 7 speed indexed? It was made for 6 speed but I have the 7 speed thumbies and a wheel to go with it. Thanks.

Doubt there will be a problem, assuming sufficient lateral travel.

I have Deore LX (M550) and nearly identical Exage CX500 nominally 7-speed derailleurs. Both will index shift reliably over 7-speed cogs, but to cover 8 speeds I need to switch the shifters to friction mode.

I examined both derailleurs closely and there's a tiny nub inside each that limits the pivot or swing. It's just enough to cause the derailleurs to nudge out of the 8th largest cog into the 7th with any serious pressure on the pedals in index mode; but it'll hold in friction mode.

One of my bucket list projects is to use a moto tool or jeweler's file to grind down the little nub that limits RD cage swing. If I screw it up on one RD, no biggie, the two models are nearly identical with only minor cosmetic differences and a hyphenated model number distinguishing the two.

I have used that derailleur with a 7 speed freewheel and downtube shifters. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work with thumbies?

I've run one indexed with 10 speed with bar end shifters and it worked surprisingly well. It's now paired with 8 speed on my GF's bike and that's somehow working too. Maybe mine has enough slop in it to be universal.

Go ahead & hook it all up & try it out. If it doesn't work, then get one of these. It will work just fine. (M591's have been a real problem solver on many bikes for me). These work perfect w/7 speed shifters.

First generation Deore was the so-called "Deer Head" group in 1981, and wasn't designed for indexed shifting.

Thanks, I meant the post-Deerhead version from '87/88. '89 got the pseudo carbon screen background under 'Deore' and was 7 speed.

The OP's Deore should work well as a 7s SIS derailer.

It looks like the spring from inside of the cable adjuster detent barrel has been placed outside of the plastic detent barrel, instead of inside of it where it is supposed to be. The barrel won't offer retention detents the way it sits now.

Do those also work with 8speed chains? I'm worried a 9 speed.chain would be too narrow for my crankset.

8-speed chain would work fine. 9-speed would probably also be great. My sense is that folks worry way too much about newer, higher cog count chain width compatibility with older cranksets. Of course the crank manufacturers want you to believe otherwise. The chain ring spacing on my wife’s 11-speed Ultegra crank is very similar to my Sugino AT and Specialized flag cranksets (used with 8-speeds).

The cassette is a different story.

Yes absolutely. My go to chain for the last few years is the KMC X8.93. It works great on 5, 6, 7, & 8 speed drivetrains. (Also, I've recently noticed that KMC is changing their numbering system on their chains and, it's getting harder to find X8.93's). The most important thing to know about these KMC chains is the X designation. It describes the "double X bridge shape" and, helps make indexed drivetrains work perfectly.

Yes, KMC's new designation for the X8.__ chains is simply X8. I think the X8 Silver/Grey is the old X8.93 and the X8 Silver is the old X8.99.

8 Speed Archives - KMC Chain

The X8 series is also my go-to chain for nearly everything. You can often find them for $10-12 online, which is a solid value for a good chain.

Wouldn’t the first gen Deore be the blue and green ones with the lower case font?

The one with the cranks with the big pedal holes...
