Sun hat for riding, any tips?
Hey,
I'm looking to upgrade few bit of riding gear for a tour (soon ish) and am wondering if you have any tips for a sun hat to use when riding which gives good all round coverage but won't catch the wind under the brim and fly off all the time.
I currently use an old army boonie hat which gives good all round coverage but on down hills it often catches the wind under the brim and takes off only for the neck strap to strangle me!
Any tips most welcome, cheers

Most here always wear helmets when riding. I have toured with various hats at different times as well as with a helmet at others. I never found a perfect answer hat wise. I have used the old cotton cycling caps with the little peak. They stay on well, but the sun coverage is minimal. I have used a few different straw, grass, or paper weave hats with mixed results. Most were passable. All required a neck/chin cord/strap. None were trouble free. Tilting them down a bit in the front or just tilting your head down a bit when at speed seemed to help.

I have been using a cap called a "juniper" I tried googling it, but alas I was unable to find mine. I recommend a hat with a bill, but one that has some sort of side flaps. I would be nice if the hat had forehead venting. The main complaint with mine is that on hot climbs, I have to stuff it under my jersey, to avoid "swamp head/ sweaty head". Definitely has to have a chin strap/ rope/ string or some sort of retention. So if you find an affordable hat like that, please post it!!!

I have used a peaked cap with a long neck flap, similar to those used by ultra endurance runners. Downhills I just screw it on tighter to my head. If it's going to be sunny I may also wear a collared shirt with the collar flipped up. I did this mtbing in Moab where I wanted to wear a helmet for protection.
Never used to but after a lifetime outside I now have sun damage - the origin of the term "red neck" that looks bad and I worry may develop into carcinoma if I'm not careful.
I use a bush hat when kayaking but on a bike the head is angled forward too far for the brim to provide neck sun coverage, especially with a collarless jersey.
Can't do links on my phone but Google: OR sun runner cap. Some brands have a cape that detaches so you can wear it like a ball cap.

My mountain bike style helmet includes a visor on the front. Photo also includes a rain cover over the helmet and visor.

I been looking for the exact same thing for exactly the same reason.
The brim design on MTB helmets works for not catching the wind, but it's way too skimpy. Hardly a brim at all. What there needs to be is a bicycling helmet that's identical to a pith helmet in shape and size. Or maybe the full-brimmed style of hard-hat. Make it safe enough to work for bicycling and give it vents in the same manner as an MTB helmet.
The best thing I've found so far is DaBrim's Rezzo brim. I use it on a Kali Lunati Sync helmet. I don't like the full-brim products by DaBrim, as they are too big, there's nothing to keep the brim from flipping up in the front (AFAIK), and they get bad reviews, concerning how the too-big brim ocillates in the wind. I don't want to wear a brim that big. A brim that sticks out 2.5" from my head is the minimum needed to shade my face, and that's as big as I want to go.
