If the bike has a lot of miles the chain and or chainrings and or cogs could be worn.

I have already changed the chain so I will change the cog don't know how many miles were put on it before I got it but I put a lot of miles on since I've owned it.

We can probably take this to another level so... When you say "slipping", is it really slipping or jumping to another cog on your cassette (not freewheel)? When does this happen? Are there any other mods that have been done to the drivetrain or is it basically still an "FX". Does this happen only under pressure of just anytime?

Doing my mindreading act and speaking for the OP: "Slipping---chain slips on one cog without jumping to another cog. Happens only under pressure (starting from a stationary position or standing up to accelerate or climb a hill). No other mods---just installing the new chain. By the way, I do 90% of my riding in the smallest or second-smallest cog."

Did it solve the issue? My hardtail hd that issue despite replacing the 3x chainrings and cassette - but then I went 1x

Getting an 8 speed freewheel if that does not fix it then I will get a new shift cable with the new 8spd.
