I am certain that like most all Bianchi road bikes the basic geomentry (size pending) is a 73' HT with a ST angle nessacary to accomadate the appropriate frame size and feel. this ranging from 80' on the smallest to '71.5 on the largest. also, again going by the catalogs, the X-4 appears to not have been ofered in the black/celeste paint scheme. I do believe that some were imported as frame only as an after thought likely sometime during the '88 model year.
one real funny thing about that "Argentin Celeste" paint scheme is I don't think I ever saw a pic of him riding a Bianchi painted like that.

Sorry for my ignorance on Bianchi's, but what does the model name/designation "X-4" mean anyway.
I'm asking because I'm surprised that an Italian manufacturer would use such a model name rather than the typical more glamourous sounding names (ie..."San Cristobal", Giro D' Italia", Centennario", "Arabesque", "Premio", "Campione D' Italia"...etc...) that were used through the years, especially on such an important bike..........X-4???? wha....???

The *actual* bike he rode to victory was more of a prototype though.. it was a Centenario I believe that was painted with the black stays and forks.
The X-4 came out in '88 as a special edition that represented his victory in 86-87 Colorado Springs

I am not sure why Bianchi chose the X-4 for that model. again other than a few emblelishments on the frame and some "expensive" (that what the catalog says expensive not expansive) pantographing, it is not much different from anyother Bianchi.
as I stated before the X-4 is only catalogged in '87 and not in the black/celeste paint. frames may have been imported in '88 but they were not cataloged. the Centenario had a nice black nickel electro plating why paint it black?
may I ask Vainglorious where you get your information about Bianchi X-4s? all mine comes from what I have learned from the catalogs and the little I recall from when I sold Bianchis. again any frame with the Argentin Celeste was rare and I only saw one. to this day I could not say for sure if it was a X-4, a Trofeo or a home paint job.

Oh hmm..the Argentin X-4 wasn't in any North American catalog, but I have a scan somewhere that I found online where it's in a catalog in Europe/Japan I believe.. I'll have to dig it up.
All my info is from online and from bits and pieces of info I've been able to acquire from people that owned one. There's an original team argentin bike that's hanging in one of the bike shops in the States (velopasa or something) and they were able to tell me a few things about it.. also sent me a pic too of the mechanic working on moreno's bike

that looks a little frankenbikish. Campi 980 or Triomphe RD, shimano shifters, Quattro brakes and a home paint job

from the head tube, it looks pretty big and tall i'd guess the seat tube to be like a 58cm+
thanks for keeping an eye out, though!

hey jughead. there are two X-4s on sale but I don't think they are your size. I almost had the 48cm for a friend for under $300

Wow, awesome finds! The CL link is dead already, I guess someone snapped it up.. both are the wrong size however, the 58 is much too large and the 48 is much too small.
That one in Boston is totally thrashed, but it's good to see some of the decals for reference. I've noticed now that there are two versions of the frame SLX decal.. one with columbus on the top edge, and the other with columbus in a different font on the bottom edge.

That is a more accurate version of what Argentin actually rode

Does anyone know if Bianchi shipped a "US" version of the X4 to the US? I know the X4 wasn't made available in the US market, but I have a lead on a Columbus SLX, celeste green, chromed frame from the late 80's. If the geometry is the same, what's the difference other than the decals?

the elusive X-4 that everyone is the hunt for I believe is the '88ish model in the Argentin black/Celeste paint scheme. to my knowledge it was never catalouged and I believe was imported somewhat as an after thought on a limited basis.
there was an X-4 catalouged in '87 but it was plain Celeste (well like Celeste is plain LOL) with an SLX/SPX frameset and a fancy pantographed C-Record group (actually Bianchi refers to it this way " the X-4 is accented with expensive Bianchi Pantographing")

I have purchased from JR and Cyclomondo.. and have been disappointed with the accuracy of their decals.
It's fine if you don't have any originals to compare it with, I suppose.. but holding up their decals to the original, I can see some discrepencies with regards to font, sizing, etc.
