Shimano 105 front derailleur troubles
I just recently bought a bike (defy advanced 2), and noticed some chain rubbing on the front derailleur. I watched some videos and unscrewed everything to try and adjust it, I noticed I was missing the support plate as my derailleur is the brazed on version. The seat tube on my bike is D shaped and I noticed when I screwed the support screw out it ended up at the corner of the seat tube, so the plate would have to be at a 45 degree angle. The tough thing is every guide to setting up and adjusting the front derailleur includes the support plate adjustment which I do not have. Can anyone weigh in on this? Is this a normal thing and do I absolutely need this plate? Thanks for any help!

I think you need the plate to keep the support screw from resting directly on the frame. They come in both curved and flat, FWIW. A pic might help.

Yes, you do need the plate. Like another person stated they come in both flat and curved to match your seat tube. However, you don't need the little plate if the support bolt presses against a portion of the braze-on. For instance, on my Bowman Palace:R the braze-on actually has a portion mounted on the frame that contacts the support bolt, which also doesn't leave any space for the Shimano plate.

The links don't work, at least not for me. Can you try just inserting them into the post using the "upload" button in the bar?

Use whichever one fits your seat tube the best. Looks like if you put a plate on the very edge of the rear of the seat tube the support bolt should butt up against it.

Or your LBS might have some extra ones kicking around they'd probably give you for free. If this is a new bike I'm surprised the shop didn't include them even if they didn't install one on your frame.

If I'm seeing what I think I'm seeing you definitely need a plate. Looks as if the support screw has already buggered the seat tube.
