Or....the 1979 Centurion that cb400bill posted is pretty sweet looking. I like the subtle gold color, chromed lugs, polished alloy components, top tube cable guides and the absence of gaudy lettering. Maybe it's the lack of style that makes it visually pleasing.

The only thing that seems out of place for me is the bar tape, I'd go with brown to match the saddle.

I'd go French, Vitus 979. Guess it's more how you build it and the frame color/finish. I really think chrome is the most stylish...

I'm right there with you--I prefer a restrained look. But if someone new to the vintage bike world is wanting a bike specifically for the looks, Italian will have the looks and the pedigree (e.g. "Oh you have a Colnago/Cinelli/etc? Nice bike man") compared to the centurion. I don't think we can ignore the fact that branding makes some more desirable and stylish. I'm just as weak to it as well, I prefer a Miyata over a Univega despite some frames being identical.

the 1968 Masi Special road the first time he added "windows" to the lugs. sort of the prototype to the
Gran Criterium lugs. honorable mention to anything by Mark DiNucci or Brain Bylis

I recently bought a road bike as I was fed up with being passed by people twice my age while riding my mountain bike. I have since realised that this had nothing to do with the bike.

True, it's very subjective. Like saying who is the best artist? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Loads of great bikes on here.

Aesthetically for me it would be various offerings from Alex Singer, Renee Herse, Cycles Grand Bois etc. As far as “classy” is concerned. The above 1986 Schwinn Voyager is a special bike to me because they hit this spot and aren’t impossible or expensive to find.

Old italian bikes are beautiful of course, but I’ve come to appreciate a more understated look on the frame with a handful of accessories (racks, fenders, dynamo etc).

My pick somewhere between understated (the above) and flamboyant (high end italian steel) would be nice Peugeots.

Thanks man. Much appreciated. I've always loved cycling but I'm becoming obsessed with vintage bikes.

Looked it up, I fail to see what separates it in appearance from any other 80s lugged steel bike.

Love the color, love the way its decked out. I'd have previously argued there's nothing classy about a Schwinn voyager but I guess a pic really is worth a thousand words.

Don't know if Columbine still makes bikes, their site hasn't updated in a decade at least but the bikes are pretty.

Colnago has had some really nice Master X-Light frames with art deco paint jobs, chrome lugs and shaped tubing that when built with 9sp Record was an impressive and classy looking bike.

I was happier when I could blame my lack of speed on the bike. I now have to admit that it has more to do with the excess 30 pounds on the saddle.
