eBay sale, bike damaged in shipment
Hello everyone,
A question for folks who are more experienced than I in eBay, especially from the selling side of things. I recently sold my dad's childhood bike on eBay and was quite slackjawed when it fetched $2,800. (https://www.bikeforums.net/showthrea...0&goto=newpost)
Per the buyer's instructions, I broke the bike down as best I could and paid UPS to package and ship it. I insured it for $3,100, which included the flat rate freight of $100, taxes, etc.
Well, UPS managed to somehow mangle it pretty good. Somehow they didn't chew up any of the chrome bits, but as you can see below, they did a number on it.
The buyer says he wants a $500 refund and I told him I'm filing a claim with UPS, who is going to determine how much to pay out. Does $500 sound fair, high, low? And if UPS comes back with, "Here's $100 for your trouble," should I pay the balance out of the sale proceeds or make a counter offer?
I hate shipping. Thank in advance for any suggestions.

If its a collectible bike, $500 is fair, as the original finish is more valuable than a repainted bike. You were wise to insure the bike, UPS damages, destroys, or loses things on a regular basis. At the shop where I used to work we would force the delivery driver to stand by and wait until each and every box was opened, as UPS would deny claims if we didn't. This saved our backsides many times.

At this point, I've agreed to refund the buyer the requested $500 and I'll take whatever I can get from UPS. Fortunately, he's on board with helping me out.
I'm glad I'm all out of vintage bicycles in my inventory. "If I'd known then..."
