I have a similar situation, and posted in the mechanics forum a few weeks ago. IIRC there’s about 5mm of threads/space in the locknut, and you want to engage at least 3mm of them, or about 3 turns. I believe most hs spacers are 2mm thick.

Anybody got a foolproof way of calculating required steerer length? Is it just head tube + hs stack height? Foolproof is key as this fool *does not* want to get/cut a bad fork.

Foolproof means installing headset and measuring what's left and available. Measure twice...
When I learned this stuff, it was 5 to 6 threads for standard headsets.
