Been racking my old brain a bit to remember the correct JIS spindle for converting a 70's French bike to SS or standard geared with a 80's alloy JIS crank turns out it is indeed a 5N. running the inside double or middle ring triple for SS. Checked it against one of the build s I still have Jeunet 620. This won't likely hep much since this is a tough spindle to find online unless you spend relatively big buck. I got mine be digging through bins of hundreds of semi junk spindles at the bike coop.

5SP worked great for my double application and there's a seller on fleabay with several available.

You might be able to get away with a 5J and Action sells 5J spindles on Amazon for $12.

Action used to sell a 5N-N, for whatever that is, it has same measures as 5N should.

I may grab a couple more of the 5SP spindles on fleabay right now. Will need to give this bike a ride after and see what I think. Fitment was good.

What I'm curious about, Action also makes French-thread cups you can buy on Amazon. I wonder if it's a thicker wall cup which would let you get away with a 68mm spindle? All you need is 1mm extra wall thickness to run a 3-series spindle. I think I have some of the Action cups in a parts bin somewhere, maybe I can check.

sounds to me like a spindle for SR's first and lowest level cotterless crankset
named the silver cotterless. no other crank arm fits as the spindle is too big.
the fat, soft, alloy arm was swaged to steel chainrings and the whole ugly set
including BB retailed for 20 bucks in 1972
