This bike was left to me by a good friend.its to small for me trying to decide if i should keep it because it was his or let someone who would appreciate it get some use from it.Just
curious as to its age and value.

How good a friend? Facebook or MySpace buddy? Someone you chatted with in the company breakroom? War buddy-- witnessed bloodshed with etc. ? Someone you've shared partners with? (not on the same night of course)----- my examples run the gamut from casual friends to friends that wouldnt divulge "where te body is buried" so to speak -- Or sometimes its a friend who just moved to Pennsylvania


If your friend is not of this earth anymore, and is of the latter variety, as far as friend's go -- i would hang a DeRosa in a place of honor possibly permanently with a plaque commemorating my buddy---
-- if the friend is not quite that intimate -- hold on to it anyway in hopes any other descendants or another aquaintance might be be sentimental for it or be able to use it


OK -- all that aside -- when you get to it and if it comes up, i would give you some coin for that bike, and i would use it , plus treat it like the modern classic that it is --- and likely so would quite a few people on this board if the bike was their size (i'm 5'8 and have ridden between size 52 and 55 )

But -- next question is how tall are you and is the bike really too small, or is it just not fitted well? -- (if your over 5'11 -- your def too big for that bike i would think )
--- its a nice bike -- pricing would depend a lot on what the group is - if its a hodge podge group, or if its consolidated , -- it looks like an older frame (mid 80's?) with a mid 90's group-- judging by the full brake cable housing and the graphics --- a lot of times these get put together "a bit here and a bit there" - with the real money spent on the parts that perform, - derailleurs and shifters, etc, -- with possibly things like hubs, headsets, bottom brackets, brakesets maybe , seatposts, coming from lower tier groups
It might have a tubing sticker on it too -- Columbus or Deddacciai decal on it somewhere too

stuff like that would help determine a decent suggested value ----

I would have to see a pic of the bottom bracket shell, but if that was good , i'd personally offer up $600 if it was a 52,53 or 54 size (and it looks like its one of those)

Looks like it has been upgraded to Campy brifters. I can't tell what models from the photos, but I would say that it is worth more than $600 to an end user. Depending on the frame condition, etc. I would expect it alone to fetch in the $400 to $600 range.

Look on Ebay at the completed auctions for some samples for starters, and then figure that you won't get that much selling it locally probably, sometimes lower by a considerable margin.

If you can provide some better images, there are lots on here who can give you some advice on the value. Good shots of the headtube, bottom bracket area, read dropouts, and seat tube for starters.

The frame on ebay with international shipping will get you an easy $800, I'd guess about $1200 complete. Since spring is here, I would suggest you put the frame/fork on ebay and sell the Chorus group locally for $600-ish, maybe more, depending on what rims are on the wheelset.

Keep in mind all these ebay numbers assume you are an experienced seller on ebay. And that you know how to properly pack and ship a bike. If not, forget ebay (unless you want to just sell the frameset...maybe) and stick with craigslist. You won't get nearly as much money there, but it will also be a lot less hassle.

The other way to look at this is find another Italian frame that fits you and transfer the components. The frame and fork will still have plenty of value on ebay and it will be easier to ship, you have the useful part of the gift from your friend, and you might still have some cash left over.
As long as you do not require a DeRosa for the frame that fits you.

As to the age, after 1985 for sure. The components may well be from the late 80's, very early 90's. Not top tier, but Campagnolo is very well respected.

I'm repainting a De Rosa. Looks awfully like the one in this photo (not sure if it's the exact one or not).

I plan to chrome the fork. The chain stay is chromed. Any suggestions on what decals to put on it? I'm not looking to retrieve the same look. I plan to paint it a deep purple (for now anyways). I just want it to come out looking like a nice De Rosa. I don't know the De Rosa line up at all. What decals should I select?

I would think if you're not going for a faithful reproduction, then pick whatever looks nice to you. Here is a link to a couple of catalogs you can look through, maybe get some ideas. Otherwise just look through pics on the net for something you like. Lotta people think a red De Rosa is the only way to go. Mine is blue!
