So, should we expect some serious attacks on climbs of this stage, or will the strategy be to hold out for the later mountain stages?

I'm not sure there will be serious attacks...the climbs aren't long or steep enough for that just yet but it maybe interesting.

Tuesday is where the real fireworks will be...

****. Andy Schleck out? He's losing time I think and he looks like he really hurt himself so I'm suspicious if he can even start tomorrow.

What the **** happened there? Tomorrow will be a bloodbath if the weather is anything like today.

eta: 4 minutes 20 for Andy Schleck...

Saxo must send a rider back to help Andy Schleck!! He's 4 min down and all alone.

edit: ok, he's got help now, but that took way too long.

It's crazy, I can't remember when there was so little information available on such a crucial point in the Tour de France the last time.

I hope the peloton+the Armstrong group+the Schleck group arrive in the finish together. It would suck for something as stupid as this to take out the #2 contender this early.

no video of big crash

did i miss it? i didn't see any video of the big crash. don't understand how armstrong/contador ended up behind the cancellara group, and also how the schlecks went down. maybe versus was on commercial, but you'd think they'd still be filming to do a playback if something big went down like it did.

Looked like a Lampre rider went down on the wet roads. Since it's so narrow, others went down as they came upon the scene and blocked the road. All of this caused the splits.

I think Contador and Armstrong may have gone down too - they probably were near Andy Schleck anyway.
Eurosport didn't have any pictures of it either, the french cameramen seem to have missed it.

someone else on different site said armstrong's jersey and shorts look like he went down. don't know if contador did.

there is going to be serious pain in the peleton tomorrow over those cobblestones.

Good win for Chavanel, but what a weird stage, I didn't expect anything like that to happen today. I hope Schleck is ok, that looked painful.#

Cycling News reported a crash around 30 km from the finish that involved several GC guys. They were keying on Andy not looking good.

I don't really understand why the field decided to neutralize the stage. Crashes are part of it. Andy Schleck was not the overall leader. In fact he was trailing the other main GC contenders. Jeez, its a race after all. These things happen in races. A crash is hardly an unusual event. Not crashing and avoiding crashes is part of winning the race. Its funny when you compare it to this year's Giro. The Pink jersey changed over a couple of times as a result of crashes on stages with rain, cobbles, and other road conditions. None of these guys were complaining then.

That was not a stage you want to ride 3 days into a grand tour.

You obviously didn't watch this year's Giro.

Tomorrow is going to be brutal. Not many have much to gain overall tomorrow, but lots of them have a lot to loss.

Seems the organizers of the major tours are putting more and more PR into both designing treacherous routes and unveiling said routes. A little game of who can push the envelope the most. I don't really understand having these stages that look like classics on a 3-week tour. Just asking for trouble, and ultimately getting it. Trying to get ratings/attention for parts of the race (individual stages) instead of the race in its entirety.

I don't blame the riders at all for neutralizing. Who is going to look out for them if not themselves? Clearly not the promoters.

Looks like the MJ -- not the field -- called for the slow pace, which is often at his discretion according to TdF etiquette, and the respect other riders have for Cancellara.
