It is a beautiful bike, unfortunately that is all I know.
Try over here, I had a lot of help there with my Merckx.
And Cadre.org is a great source of info on Merckx also.
Good luck! Great ride!

Awesome bike. Obviously, you know that it was made by Kessels. He was a local frame builder in Belgium that made some of the bikes Eddy rode during his career. It says alot of Kessles, since Eddy only rode bikes made by Colnago, Ugo, and Kessels. Kessels also made bikes under the name of Main D' Or. I dont know if the spelling is correct but it means the hand of Gold. I have an orange Kessels made Merckx that I will be restoring once I'm back home here shortly. Sorry I can't give you more info but I'm not home at the moment but you can rest assure you have a high quality bike. Kessels made cheap bikes also, but your's is not one of them. It's awesome to see another Kessels. IMO, they make Falcon made EM bikes look cheap of the same era.

Very true. I should of said "mostly rode", but once he won his first TDF, he mainly rode the brands I mentioned. He only rode Peugeot and Superia when he was still a rookie and not known. Once he started to dominate the sport he only rode the brands he wanted regardless of the team sponsor. Hell, he only rode bikes bearing his name.

Where r u located? The paint doesn't look too bad. Maybe just touching it up a bit would suffice. Also, once u respray it, you"ll lose the uniqueness of it. For one, the gold handwritten on the BB can't be replaced and it's something all Kessels made EM bikes I've seen have had.

Does the handwriting have to do with them being team bikes or custom orders?

I just bought an Eddy Merckx frame/fork that has a "Lievens" decal on the chainstay, I believe that this may be a shop, does it ring a bell with you?

Thanks

My bad. As far as I know, the serial numbers were in the order that the bikes were made per year. I'm not sure of this as I was told this by a few local Belgian bike shops. FYI, one bike shop told me that the gold Lettering was in reference to the bike shop is was being made for while another said it was the orders' name. Who knows. But I do know that I can't wait to restore mine.

Well it is just the name "Lievens" in the same font as the bike in this pic without the "R" but it does have the World Champ colours. The bike is an Eddy Merckx, the decal on the chainstay is common for shops to put as an ad and protection so I thought maybe there was a shop "Lievens".

thanks

He vjp. Lievens is a bike in Belgium. It was still open when I left Belgium. That bike I posted, no longer mine, was received without decals by the shop and then they applied their decals.

You might check with USAZorro, as he has the bike, to see if there was a shop sticker on it. I don't remember as it's been a while since I last saw any of my bikes.
