Colnago Bikes: What is the big deal?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Colnago Bikes: What is the big deal?

Just browsing ebay and holy crap, Colnago bikes are crazy expensive. Saw one for 7k...guy said it retailed for 10k? What in the world could warrant their outrageous pricing. Even the really old colnagos I see selling for over 3k. Man, either someone is really doing a good job of hyping these things up, or maybe these things really have ferrari engines built inside the frame .

Ernesto Colnago himself built frames for Eddy Merckx back in the 60's and 70's and they were ridden by Eddy and others to numerous championships. So the pedigree is there. And, unlike a lot of classic Italian steel frame builders, Colnago was an early adopter of new technologies to keep their product line modern and competitive with johnny-come-lately manufacturers like Trek and Specialized.

So that's the heritage and the reputation that probably supports the high prices (and high quality) that go with Colnago frames. There's a bike club in my area that is made up mostly of forty plus, upscale men and women who all ride Colnagos. It's nice to see them, not unlike watching an exotic Italian car club with gray-hairs cruising in Ferrari's and Maserati's.

There is a huge premium for Colnago frames; think 98 point Wine Spectator Bordeaux's. The reason for their premium price is that some people gladly pay it.

...what's the deal with Colnago?
It's one of those "if you have to ask" kind of deals.

Recently acquired one that's about 20 years old. Sadly, there is no Ferrari engine hidden inside.

It's the logo, and the graphics. People like me, droolers basically, may never spend that loot on a bike, nor do we have the racing experience to really appreciate the finer points of the frame tech and so on. But we know for sure we will look bad-ass on that bike, and that it is drop-dead sexy. I'm just speaking for the droolers here, the real racieurs probably have different reasons.

It's like a Benz . . . not the finest vehicle out there, but it has the name, the prestige, the cachet.

Great bikes but not the only great ones and yes, I agree that their price disparity is over the top but they're a real stunner. Frames at some places can be had for under 2. If you want a different perspective, look at DeRosa & Ciocc to name just 2
