Tempe Town Lake

Rode to Tempe Town Lake this morning. I know. Too many times the same direction. Short on time this week. Pix are here.

The map of the ride to the lake is here.

I started out riding to McDs at Indian School Rd & 7th Ave for breakfast. Then QT for tea before starting east on the canal. The sun hadn't risen when I got to the canal this morning. The weather is pretty nice too. Mid 60s F.

At 44th St my old boss called. We were supposed to golf yesterday with friends. He thought it was this morning. Got to the course and we weren't there. But he lives near Tempe Town Lake so we met there and went to brunch. A little Mexican restaurant called Susie's on University Blvd E. of the 101 Fwy. Good food. Afterwards he dropped me off at the lake before running errands for SWMBO.

There were several activities going on at the Lake. A carnival on the south side and what looked like a triathlon(?) on the north side. I went around as best as possible and got back on the Grand Canal.

See those clouds in the background? That's where I need to go. Started worrying about rain.

The rain didn't materialize but I got a light sprinkle the last mile home. Had to stop for what may have been that triathlon at Washington St. A LOT of riders went past.

Granada Park

Rode to Granada Park yesterday afternoon. Tossed some kashi to the ducks. Then looped around the North Mountain Phoenix Preserve before heading home.

Weather was great! Low 90s to 80s F with a slight breeze out of the east. The pix are here.

The map is here.

The ride started north on 23rd Ave to Maryland. Then east to Granada Park. At about 7.5 mi.

The lighting was good for some shots.

After that I got on the Arizona Canal heading NWish. Then onto the Dreamy Draw Drive. Heading for the Dreamy Draw Path.

Then follow the State Route 51 Trail to Venturoso Park. Ride thru the park to Acoma and 32nd St. Take Acoma east to 28th St. Then Nisbet to Cave Creek Rd to Greenway Pkwy. That is where the Cave Creek Tributary Trail starts. Head west on the south side of Greenway Pkwy. At 20th St the sun was setting and the bridge is photogenic.

I got off the trail to eat at Arby's. By the time I got back it was getting dark. The Cave Creek Tributary Trail is paved and takes you to the Cave Creek Wash Trail.

In the dark it is eerie. The trail winds under trees that sometimes hang down low. In daytime you can see to duck better. My light would often be shining off to the side at a curve so the warnings were short. Some of the lower parts were covered in sand. At one point I lost control and found myself off the path. Didn't fall but scared the heck out of me.

Eventually I made it to the Cave Creek Wash Trail. It is better lit. There were more pedestrians and even a few cyclists on it. So be careful in the dark.

Eastside Canal Loop

This morning I rode the Grand Canal, Indian Bend Wash and Arizona Canal. The weather was great. Mid 50s to start warming to low 80s by the end around noon. The pix are here.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/res1du...57671952014347

The map is here.

I started out riding to McDs at 7th Ave & Indian School Rd for breakfast. Then QT for a bottle of tea. Then onto the Grand Canal at 3rd Ave. It was just getting light as I got on the canal. Sunrise was still twenty minutes or so away. There seemed to be more pedestrian traffic than normal this morning. Not heavy but usually Sunday mornings the canal path is almost empty.

My plan was to ride the Grand Canal to the east end. Then follow the north shore of Tempe Town Lake to Indian Bend Wash. There was something going on at Tempe Town Lake. So I rode east on Curry Rd to Indian Bend Wash and turned north there. Like the Grand Canal, Indian Bend Wash had more foot traffic than normal. Maybe it's the weather. I detoured to BoSa's on McDowell Rd near the trail for a snack. Stopped here and there for shots.

Northeast Loop

This morning I rode a loop around the hills, Shaw Butte, Lookout Mtn, Mummy Mtn and Camelback Mtn. It is getting chillier in the early morning. But it was still above 50 (51F) this morning. Pix are here.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/res1du...57697338298120

The map is here.

https://www.strava.com/activities/1946309346

I started out riding to McDs near 19th Ave & Northern for breakfast. Then across the street for a bottle of tea. But settled for water. Then up 23rd Ave towards 25th Ave and the Arizona Canal. There was a new sign with rather old dates there.

Huh? by res1due, on Flickr

From there get on the Cave Creek Trail. The west side was mucked up by construction but I was able to get thru. Follow Cave Creek Trail almost to Greenway where it splits. The Cave Creek Trail goes under Greenway and continues more northerly. The Cave Creek Tributary Trail travels east and follows Greenway. There were a lot of people walking their dogs so ride easy.

Crossing 7th St by res1due, on Flickr

The trail which is mostly a sidewalk east of 7th Ave ends at Cave Creek Rd. To continue east we will have to ride thru some neighborhoods. Ride south on Cave Creek Rd to Nisbet Rd and turn east. At 28th St you will have to detour. Go one block south to Hillery, one block east to 29th St then back one block north to Nisbet. The reason for using Nisbet is it crosses the 51 Fwy.

Nisbet Rd by res1due, on Flickr

There was nobody else on the bridge this morning but there were signs that last night had some activity.

Broken by res1due, on Flickr

BTW my next destination is Rainbow Donuts at 40th St & Thunderbird. No special way to get there. I'm just cutting thru the neighborhood. Had an apple fritter and small coffee. It was good!

My next destination is the pathway along Indian Bend Wash. You can't follow it all the way to the Arizona Canal but you can work around the wash. Watch out for golfers. I almost rode in front of a guy teeing off. At Shea Blvd I got on 52nd St south. We are in Paradise Valley now. The houses in this neighborhood would buy a block in mine.

Eventually I got to the Arizona Canal & Indian Bend Wash. The route home from here is almost the same as last week. Except I got off at 44th St and rode to Culver's at 8th St & Camelback Rd for lunch.

Loop to the Southeast

Sunday morning I rode to Ahwatukee. Not too far in, turning back on the Warner Elliott Loop and the Kyrene Canal. Forgot about the Ironman at Tempe Town Lake! Had to change my homeward route. The pix are here.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/res1du...57697338298120

The map is here.

https://www.strava.com/activities/1972661148

Started out riding to McDs for breakfast. Then to QT for a bottle of tea. Where I realized I left my cash at home. Thank God for plastic. Stopped at an ATM further south.

I followed Central Ave to Rio Salado. Onto the South Overlook Trail heading east. Stopped to shoot a burrowing owl.

Burrowing Owl by res1due, on Flickr

At 24th St turn south and ride to Southern. Then east to 40th St. Then east to get on the Highline Canal. At 48th St turn south. This time I rode to the west side of Rustler's Roost. It's a fancy steak house on the side of South Mountain. Following 48th St to Elliott Rd. Then turn west. Elliott turns into the Warner Elliott Loop. That just means it swings around into Warner a mile south.

Looking at the map I aimed for a Dunkin Donuts at Priest Dr. The apple fritter and coffee were good. I enjoyed my snack outside on the patio. My bike was locked to a Palo Verde tree. When I started to leave my front tire was flat. It was fine when I got there. How did I miss that?

There were 2 punctures in the tube. I put in a new tube instead of repairing the tube. The thorns in the tire looked like Palo Verde thorns but probably not from this one. There were several Palo Verde tree trimmings in the road that morning. I must have hit one.

Bike repaired and ride east to the Kyrene Canal and turn north. I followed it to Kiwanis Park. Then got on College Ave to continue north. Approaching Tempe Town Lake from the south there were a lot of barricade signs, police lights announcing the ironman race. I knew about it but forgot.

To get home I worked my way onto the Rio Salado Pathway to the west of Priest Dr. The rest of the ride is almost a reversal of the ride out.

Telegraph Pass to Sky Harbor

This morning I rode to Telegraph Pass in South Mountain Park. Then to the south side of Sky Harbor to shoot some planes. Good weather. Chilly but not too cold. The pix are here.

This morning I had breakfast before starting. So the ride started from home. Heading east on Campbell to 15th Ave. Then south to the 3-way intersection of Grand Ave and Roosevelt St. SE along Grand Ave. Then work your way thru downtown until you're heading south on Central Ave towards Rio Salado.

Then continue south on Central Ave heading to South Mountain Park. The restrooms at the Ranger Station were closed. The sign said to use the restrooms at the Big Ramada with instructions. The restrooms at the Big Ramada were also closed. Their sign said to go to the Activity Center back near the Entrance. Thanks! The view from the Big Ramada is good.

I've had a virus this last week. Or some kind of sinus infection. So my plan wasn't to ride to the top or even Dobbins Lookout. Rather to Telegraph Pass. I told myself it was OK not to make that. Truth was I felt fine. When the huffing and puffing was too much on the climb I would ease back on the pedals. From the San Juan & Summit intersection to the pass I averaged 5-6 mph. About normal for me.

The next part of my plan was to ride to Best Donuts at 24th St & Baseline. It was good. Then south along 24th St, watch out for construction SB to Vineyard, to Rio Salado Pathway. Then head home.

But there was a lovely east breeze. A lot of aircraft were coming in this morning. And it's only 2 mi, maybe 2.5 mi, to a nice new rest area opposite the tower. Yeah 2 mi into the east wind. But it was worth it.

One of these days I'm going to catch one of the big 4 engine airliners. But not today.

Going back west was great. The east wind gave me a good push. Soon I was back into downtown. Had lunch at Habit Burger. Then home.

Westside Loop

Yesterday morning I rode a loop on the westside. It was chilly. Temps started in the low 40s and got up to about 60ish. The pix are here.

I started around 5:30 AM riding south to McDs at 24th Ave & Thomas Rd for breakfast. Then to QT at 27th Ave for a bottle of tea. Then I headed to I17 & 59th Ave. Just checking the new freeway under construction there. They still have a long ways to go.

New Freeway Construction by res1due, on Flickr

Sunrise by res1due, on Flickr

This time I rode south on 67th Ave heading towards Lower Buckeye Rd. Then east. There are some curving bike lanes south of Lower Buckeye Rd and I rode a couple. I stopped at Blooming Donuts near 99th Ave for a coffee break. The donut was good too. Then swing around to Avondale Blvd to head north to the New River Trail at Bethany Home Rd.

I followed the New River Trail to Thunderbird Rd. Then over to 83rd Ave for lunch. North on 83rd to the Skunk Creek Trailhead. Then follow that to the Arizona Canal and head home.

In addition to the usual cyclists, walkers and joggers I saw 3 hawks and a roadrunner on the New River Trail. I think one of the hawks was a young kestrel. There was also a guy on inline skates sitting on a bench playing the harmonica. That was different. There was also a repair station just north of Peoria Ave. That's new.

Western & Consolidated Canals

Yesterday I rode a figure eight route. Grand Canal, Western Canal to Consolidated to Tempe Canal to the Rio Salado Pathway.

Pix are here.

The map is here.

Started out with breakfast at McDs & a stop at QT. Then onto the Grand Canal riding east. They're draining the canals in preparation for winter maintenance. East of 48th St the Grand Canal was mostly empty.

Instead of riding down to Tempe Town Lake I crossed on the Mill Ave bridge. Then around ASU to College Ave and south. At Baseline Rd I stopped at Bosa Donuts for a coffee and snack. Then over to Kiwanis Park to get on the Western Canal Trail. The Canal swings to the east about half a mile south of Guadalupe Rd. Then runs straight east to the Consolidated Canal. East of Alma School Rd the canal was mostly dry.

Instead of getting right on the Consolidated Canal I rode into Freestone Park across Lindsay Rd to use the facilities. Then got up on Consolidated Canal from Guadalupe Rd riding north.

By University Dr the canal was drying up. It was dry by the time I got to the junction with the South Canal. South Canal was dry and they were obviously cleaning it up. The junction is where the South Canal splits into Tempe and Consolidated Canals. I rode west on the Tempe Canal.

At Country Club Dr I got off for lunch. Then worked around to the Rio Salado Pathway at Dobson Rd. Then west to Central Ave. Then home thru downtown.

from Sky Harbor to the Arizona Canal

Yesterday I rode to Rio Salado. Followed the path to Sky Harbor then Tempe Town Lake. Then up Indian Bend Wash Trail to Osborn. Over to the Arizona Canal and home. I deliberately waited until after 9 AM when the temps got up into the 40s.

This is the first post in this thread where the photos are displayed on imgur. Flickr is changing their policy towards free users. Starting in January they are allowing only 1000 photos. And I'm too cheap to pay. Especially when there are other free options available. All my images on imgur are here.

https://locolobo13.imgur.com/all/

If it easier the posts are here.

The ride was fun. Sunday morning traffic was still light even at 9-10 AM. Of course once on the Rio Salado Pathway the only traffic was other cyclists and pedestrians. The 40th St rest area had almost no visitors. A few cyclists rode by as I took photos.

Lunch was at Jack in the Box at 40th St & University Dr. Usually Jack in the Box is second tier in my opinion. But yesterday the meal was good. The burger was hot and tasty, the lettuce crisp and fresh and the onion rings were just right.

Finale

For several reasons I am ending this thread. I will start a new one here next year. The main reason is the changes at Flickr. In Feb, if I haven't cut my photos down to 1000 or less they will for me. Either way some of the photos in this thread will no longer be there.

So it is time to move on. Thanks to all those who have viewed, read and commented here. Knowing that there are at least a few people looking in here has inspired me to get out every weekend the last couple of years.

My Flickr photostream will still be there. But I haven't decided what to do with it yet. Let it be a static display of the same 1000 photos? Or periodically change it up? Still thinking about it.

There are things I like about imgur and things I don't. In Flickr a good photo generates 20+ views. In imgur all my posts have generated 100+. That is probably because imgur is more social media than a photographers hangout.

The downside is I haven't figured out how to organize in imgur yet. Imgur seems geared to fewer images per post. You can put more images in a post. But it isn't the same as an album in Flickr. Tags are helpful but there is a 5 tag limit per post. I am treating this as a challenge. One which I haven't figured out yet.

One more change is coming for me. My job is currently 5 mi from home. Within the next 1-3 mo we are moving the lab to 25 mi from home. Too far for me to commute by bicycle.

But I feel the need to commute by bicycle. The simplest option so far would be to drive a little more than half way. Park at a Park and Ride. Then ride 10-12 mi to work. There are several options to explore. I plan to blog about them when we get going. No matter what the total hours involved in commuting go up.

For now Thanks and Good Bye. May your rides always be fun.

I never hosted a thing the entire time I had a thread about Tempest and my other bikes and how I built them up and it was here for several years and got over 19,000 views before I deleted it for no good reason. I think you can do the same and back it up if you have some pointers from the staff. Your thread has been a treasure of a travelogue and if you can replace images over time to a new storage scheme and save them as backup for yourself you can probably avoid the pitfalls of hosting changes or demises.

Do try? I had hundreds of posts and perhaps more images, some of which I wasn't wise enough to save properly. You only have eight pages in this thread, I'm betting that Bike Forums has the space for them permanently.

And thank you for sharing such a enormously informative and entertaining thread. I'm sure that all who have seen in have been quite impressed.
