If you have a pic of the bike and a description of frame size and any unique features (even scratches or dents), you might want to post that in case any of our local or national online purveyors attempt to sell it.

Please post the Serial Number and a couple of pictures of your bike. I check Craigslist and Backpage for bike deals daily. I also keep my eyes open for stolen bikes.
My suspicion is that thieves travel to a different city, steal a dozen good bikes and leave the area to sell the bikes elsewhere.

On moving to another city, maybe. A couple of years ago I recovered my lost hybrid. It was 2 months later. Just showed up on CL locally one day. I am checking the local CL and Let Go daily.

Please click on loco's photos to expand them and get a close look at TREK 3700. Regard the sticker on downtube, kickstand and brake levers turned down.

Wow. Luckily never had a bike stolen and I've never locked one up on local rides. Like you I'll stop at McD's for breakfast.

I think that's utter nonsense.
One of the guards in my office building used to demand that I LIFT up my bike if I was going to wheel it through the lobby. Presumably, he thought the tires would sully the carpet.
I asked him the obvious question ... how are my tires any different than the shoes of the people walking through the lobby?

I am back in school as mature student on the cheap. My Apt complex is a little ghetto, surrounding area not too bad. In metropolitan areas, bike thieves sometimes will come right in to apt's/residences looking for something to ride off with. My CV s#it is stored off site, or bolted down. There goes my deposit.

That's rough. I've never had it happen, but I know I'd be crushed if it did. My wife had her bike stolen when she was 14 (she's 58 now) and she says if she thinks about it much, it still makes her cry. Can't blame her. Her bike represented a lot of babysitting money and it was the first big thing she bought on her own with her own money. I hope your bike is recovered.

Had my newish 1970 Schwinn Varsity stolen (locked outside my apt). I don't think I have ever recovered from the loss as I am now very obsessive about leaving my bikes outside (even well locked).
Another endorsement for Abus locks!

Here's an update to the story. October 2017 the police called me to say my bike had been found by a pawn shop. The detective asked if I just wanted the bike back or did I want to prosecute. I told her that if the person who sold the bike had stolen my bike or knew it was stolen sure but otherwise not. She explained what she would do and that it might take some time.
It did. From time to time the detective would update me on the case but it was October 2018 before the case was closed. There wasn't enough evidence to prosecute the person who sold the bike which is fine. Now starts the process of getting my bike back.
Since the pawn shop also had a claim on the bike there was a hearing to determine ownership. The hearing was Nov 1. The bike shop printed out a copy of the receipt for me. I brought some photos with me also.
The pawn shop owner was nice. He showed up to claim the bike if the original owner didn't claim it. He graciously relinquished his claim to me. The Hearing Officer awarded me the bike.
Yesterday I received a letter from the police saying I could pick up my bike. There were instructions; hours, location and documents required.
Today I showed up a little after noon. The place was busy. Two hours later they call me to the window and ask me to describe the bike. Sure. Trek 3700, lime green... Another half hour they call me back up to tell me they can't find it. The lady said they checked three times. She gave me the number to Risk Management to file a claim.
I'm kinda bummed. I was looking forward to riding the bike again. Just call me disappointed.
Next time I just want my bike back.

What the....? Was it stolen from the police station this time? Sorry for your troubles, especially after you thought you were getting it back!

Probably sold with the rest of a lot, at the latest police impound auction, and no one wants to own up ......
I bought a bike once, from a guy that picks them up at those auctions - He told me they go cheap.

It is NEVER the "fault" of the owner of anything that gets stolen... It is the thief that is at "fault" , then you can go down the line as to who contributed, and since most thefts are done by a small % of people but done over and over again, even when caught... Can you guess who I would blame...???

I was wondering how this old post got revived ... and now I know the end of the story, or maybe it's NOT the end of the story? Only time will tell.

Sorry to hear this, it's the worst feeling getting a bike stolen. I had a Specialized Stump Jumper Comp stolen recently. Really frustrating. On the flip side, it gave me the excuse to buy a new carbon Santa Cruz and now I'm more excited than ever to go ride!

I've been in a evidence room to recover items before and I could see how things get lost. The bike was partially stripped and they were pushing parts at me just to get some room. Good luck.

Incredible...just incredible. And no one at the police department is "responsible" when something like this goes missing? I'm assuming thieves didn't break into the station at night and steal your bike...correct? So why is no one responsible? I sure hope Risk Management gives you the maximum for your bike...you deserve it. I'd also write a letter to the Chief of Police and maybe even copy it to the Mayor's office. I just hate this kind of incompetence.

The end. I think. Received a check from Risk Management today. They depreciated the bike which was expected.
Went to bikeindex.org and reported my bike recovered. Left a couple of paragraphs explaining the circumstances. I think that closes the case.

Very sorry for all that. Trust you'll find a replacement that works well for you.
