Walk to Work Day

Walk to Work Day is coming up on Friday 5 October.

Home Page: Walk to Work Day

On the site ...

Top ten walking tips for busy people:

Walking regularly is the simplest and most practical way of increasing your daily exercise. Now is a great time to put your feet first and step into spring and build walking into your daily routine.

  • Walk some or if you can, walk all the way to work.
  • Get off the bus, train, or tram a few stops earlier.
  • Leave the car at least 1km away from work and walk the rest of the way.
  • Set your alarm 30 minutes earlier to fit in a walk to work.
  • Organise a walk at lunchtime with colleagues.
  • Walk all or part of the way to meetings rather than driving or catching taxis
  • Schedule a "walking meeting” (a Walking Workshop) instead of sitting down. Walk and talk and you’ll get double the benefit.
  • Ensure you get up from your desk at least once an hour and walk around the office.
  • Wherever possible, use the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator.
  • Host a healthy breakfast to reward those who participate.

Walking all the way to work is out for me, but I might get off the bus a stop or two early, and of course, I always take the stairs.

When I don't ride to work I almost always walk to work. Rarely take the bus. It's about a 2 mile walk.

I walk to work every day .... from wherever i sleep, to my office. Sometimes I have to walk all the way from one end of the house to the other.

It's rough.

On the plus side .... I have gained about 80 pounds over my weight when I commuted everywhere by bike. I am definitely plus-sized now.

Walking is really good for you in many ways. It's incredibly relaxing to do a long walk. You see things you never seen before, even though you drive by it a thousand times before. I do some deep contemplation too while walking. I feel physical improvement as well as spiritual upliftingness and positive out look on live in general.

I don't think I have walked to work a single day in my life, (I was going to ride the bike a few times, but didn't) ... On the other hand the wife walked 3Km or so to work & 3 Km or so home pretty well every day for about 40 years regardless of weather or time of year ...

Aw, man...the one day this week I do not have to go to work!

I really should start walking more often. I'm lazy, and it's just so easy to take the bicycle, although my work is a reasonable walking distance from home.

Well, I missed the day but I intend to get off the bus or train a few stops earlier. I used to do this at one time but discovered my body was in no shape for walking! If you haven't walked 5 miles, once it's tried, your feet will be killing you the next day! After a while the body recovers and if you continue walking, it adjusts to the extra exercise.

Yes ... I was getting off at an earlier stop quite regularly for a while, but haven't done that in probably about 8 months. So I did it on Friday and plan to do it more often.

I cannot remember if I walked or rode my bike last Friday. I think I rode. Wait! I did ride because I had a couple of doctor appointments in the morning and didn't feel like taking the bus.
