Ice cream or the hill?

There's a hill in my world that I really want to conquer with ease and confidence, but so tempted by that big bowl of ice cream smothered in chocolate sauce instead. Currently trying to do intermittent fasting with low carb. Want to lose weight for good health, but especially for more enjoyable riding (and maybe look better in my jersey). Twenty years ago, no question I'd sacrifice to beat the hill. Now, not such an easy choice. Confession is good for the soul, so thought I'd bring it up here. Fewer and fewer second chances at my age, really want to go for it.

I eat a lot of ice cream, but I live in a place with smaller hills.

I think your own words should be your guide. Good luck and I hope you will be happy with what ever your choice.
Frank.

There is a ride up Mt Diablo where you get a t-shirt if you break an hour. After a couple years in a row of missing it by a minute or less, I got serious with my diet. Basically I cut out crap: no deserts, no candy, no soda, no fried foods, no chips, no cookies, no ice cream. For 8 weeks.

Finally got my hour T-shirt. And the feeling was more delicious than any ice cream.

So that’s an experience I use for myself when I’m struggling with delayed gratification.

You’re looking at this all wrong. Eat the ice cream. It’s called resistance training.

Classic case of a non-exclusive choice. Ride up the hill, return, and have the ice cream.

We all have our nemeses, don't we? For me, it's not the ice cream ... it's the salty crunchy snacks. OMG.

My advice is to keep the stuff outta your house, and replace it with healthier stuff. Climb that hill like a banshee, and for your reward, go out and have that bowl of ice cream. It'll taste even better when you earn it.

Why not have someone at the top of the hill waiting with the ice cream?

Why not just lower your gearing and still eat the ice cream! If you are trying for time that is a different story!

The Sugar energy of the ice cream will help you get up the hill ... sit , enjoy , then go..

Non melting, Nutella and Baguettes worked for me, on bike tours , with a late afternoon hill in front of me..

It's really quite simple and easy: get rid of all snack foods in your house. Then simply eat smaller portions and follow this rule at least for dinner: half the plate vegetables, carbs the size of your fist, protein the size of your palm. More carbs early in the day, less at dinner. Get rid of the calories which are easy to get rid of, whatever they are. Tea at lunch instead of juice for instance. Keep it simple. It takes a while for the body to adjust to smaller portions, so ease into it. Just gradually cut back. Forget what your mother told you about cleaning your plate and compost what you don't eat. It's not a sin. If there's a sin, it's in eating more than one needs. If you need a snack in the afternoon, and I usually do, make it healthy: yogurt with fresh fruit and nuts, a piece of toast with peanut butter, that sort of thing. If I make pancakes in the morning, I'll save one out for my PM snack.

I have several hills (as most of us do) that call me out. One in particular that kicked my butt. This year, got the 50/34, will weigh in 15lbs less. Have the ice cream now and then, better yet get the sherbert. A 5lb loss can be felt on the hills.

It’s terrific that you still want to take that hill! That will go a long way.
