Nuts for Sturmey-Archer Axle

I have an SA XRD8 rear hub. The nuts use a 15mm wrench to loosen/tighten.

With my fenders on, the stays interfere enough that I can’t really pull the axle back far enough to tighten the chain adequately. When I remove a link, it tightens but the axle is only about half in the dropouts. It has big SA acorn nuts on it now.

I would like to put on regular nuts to tighten the axle with the fender stays unattached. Then, once the axle is tightened, put on the stays with another nut holding them in place.

So.... what size nuts are they? What measurement am I looking for to buy online or at LBS?

The XRD8 has a 13/32" x 26 axle, the same as the classic 3 speed, so finding a standard nut should not be a problem.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I have effectively no LBS. Performance Bikes closed, my local enthusiast closed, now there’s only a shop which is seemingly limited to assembling cheap Chinese bikes and selling them to our transient population. My buddy just started a Velofix franchise but he doesn’t have stock built up yet.

In riding it with the axle half out of the dropouts, it rotated the reaction arm and started popping out of gear. Luckily I was going to the hardware store where the guy likes my bikes. He was looking at it and suggested drilling new holes in the fender stays to use the other fender holes.

Doh! I hadn’t thought of that.

I had a metal punch so I was able to punch a new hole and only the vertical stay needed to be relocated. So problem solved, just not quite how I expected.

(Also seems to have attached the new nylon feet I made to replace the crutch feet it came with. I’m kinda proud of those, so I’ll leave them in rather than deleting the pic )
