Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looks like Sram Red , well, partially anyway, but their site only lists prices for DuraAce, Ultegra and Rival ?! Did you customize it or what? And where in$ do you end up that way?

On second thought, I may be wrong, that might indeed be a Rival!

The frame is the color scheme for their Rival model but I had my own components already so it was never fully built up to factory specs. The wheels are from the Ultegra model and I had the rotors upgraded to Avid HSX instead of the stock Tektros. Stock Volagi steel railed saddle, seat post, and Avid BB7 road disc brakes.

Stuff I had on a Pedal Force CG2 group buy frame that was stripped:
Sram Red Black: 50/34 BB30 cranks, 11-26 1090 cassette, Steel cage braze on Front derailleur, Rear derailleur
3T Team 9cm -17, 3T Team Carbon Rotundo Pro 40cm bars
Arundel carbon cages, Keo Max pedals
New Red 1091 chain, Conti 4000s 700x23.

I decided to buy the bike after a test ride a couple weeks ago had me intrigued enough after 40 miles and a couple thousand feet of climbing. The founders of Volagi based their company and bike on the type of riding I do, long distance. Centuries and double centuries. After completing the Devil Mountain Double a few weeks ago on my Tarmac I figured I should really test ride a Volagi. It would be nice to finish a double and not be so completely wiped that evening and the following day.

The feedback of the frame is muted compared to the stiffness of my Tarmac SL2 Comp. It's not as dead as a Trek 5200 I used to have but you can tell the difference pretty quickly. It's slower starting turns on fast descents but once in the turn it tracks just as accurately. With the disc brakes I had to go without a PowerTap rear wheel which is what I've used exclusively for almost two years. The Volagi is very well balanced and stomping on the pedals is rewarded with immediate giddy up and go. I left the stack of spacers so it's higher than the bars on my other bikes.

The picture is from an absolutely miserable climb in Saratoga, CA. Bohlman & On Orbit roads climb about 2000' in 4 miles, a lot of sustained 14%-16% grades. I was tired but not 'beat up' after the climb and descent.

The weight is about 18lbs, based on me weighing myself with the bike then just myself. That's with cages, small Lezyne pump, Garmin cadence/speed sensor. I'm 5' 7" 140lbs.

I'll be commuting on it all week so will have some more feedback later.

Thanks for the info. We'll be looking forward to an update. I would be particularly interested in how you feel about the brakes. I have an SL-3 Tarmac and a Focus Izalco both with Sram brakes and I almost think disks would be an overkill and at 5'-10 & 189lb I am a bit heavier than you.

Besides that, I have yet to hear Volagi make fun of their customer base, like the way Spesh does and did when it came to this type of design.

I just bought this 2012 Tarmac last week! I started off on a 52cm Tommaso Imola and rode that for 4yrs till my body parts wanted to die! So I finally upgraded to a better fitting and much nicer bike. It was hard finding a 49cm Tarmac but it was worth the wait.

I will be saving up to upgrade the wheels as they are the stock DTSwiss and are a bit heavy. It came with a Romin Expert Saddle but I already have one so if anyone wants a brand new Romin let me know! I rode to work on saturday and it was the greatest 35 miles ever!

very nice bike, but your hubs comment has me baffled. prebuilt wheels like that are designed for the included hubs. get yourself some keo 2 max pedals and enjoy.

The frame of my vintage hybrid Univega cracked a couple of months ago (aluminium frame, split right next to the rear axis) and so began the long research what bike would be next. The winner was the 2012 Motobecane Century Pro Ti and after about 500 miles I'm very happy with my choice. Some of the key attributes were the large frame, a 61cm which fits me (6ft, 3.5inches) very well, as well as the rather upright position + 32c tires - all in all an excellent commuter bike. I will post in the forum a short review but keep it short for now

i havent seen one of these yet. i think it is a pretty neat idea for a defined market (which you seem to fit)

my only concern would be the brake calipers. do they have a lot of flex in them? my wife has them on her single speed commuter and they seem to work fine but that is different than a guy your size on a road bike. they are not cheap, but a set of pauls racer brakes would be a very fitting upgrade. i hear good things about them and the black ones would look great on a ti frame.

You can't put different hubs on those wheels! Those strip spokes will only work with those Mavic hubs , and they are super hubs! & super spokes! Why would you want to change them?! You do realize there are only 10 spokes per wheel....right? Those ate pass-thru hubs!

whoops. Missed that in the caption. 105 pedals look cooler than keo classics. If you are going with more expensive pedals, then keo 2 max.
