I heard that one person finished behind me at Eroica California last year, but I'm honestly not sure how that happened. They must have walked the entire course or something. On top of that, I'm coming off an injury and have only ridden my bike twice in the past six weeks.

So, yeah, I'm throwing down the gauntlet for the lanterne rouge. It's going to take some serious slowness to finish behind me.
Most folks make their excuses for why they got dropped after the ride. Good to see so many BF members being proactive on this.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, wants to see me in a saloon girl outfit. Me in lycra is bad enough.

When I was in college, just before the first test in my Classical Mechanics class, the professor told us a story. There was a little engine that wanted to go up a big hill. It was a steep hill and very intimidating, but the little engine was determined. He set off saying, "I think I can, I think I can...." He made it half way up the hill still saying, "I think I can, I think I can...." But before he got to the top, the little engine exploded and tumbled back down the hill in a fiery disaster. The moral of the story: Sometimes thinking you can just isn't enough.

I've embraced this advice and learned to approach life with reasonable expectations.

question: I keep hearing about all the flat tires. Is it because of goat head thorns or sharp rocks? I imagine glass isn't an issue.

What's the deal???

Pinch flats and rocks. We flatted twice on the first day on the tandem. Pinch flats both times. I believe if you're not in too much of a hurry you can pick a line and avoid punctures, but we took advantage of gravity and the descents. Speed(& weight)got the better of us in the rocky sections.

A lot of pinch flats! Run full pressures and you are skittish all over the rocks. Run low and the ride improves at a cost. I am 200 pounds plus so I ran full pressure. Lighter guys can drop some pressures a bit without too much fear.
Also, having sagged this one a couple times, I recommend a Park Tire Boot in your repair kit if you run softer sidewalls. Have had to use them twice after the run down the big hill after lunch day 1

I have to disagree Rich, I for one would love to see that, mainly to see the reactions of others. Of course the downside is that I'd probably break a rib from laughing so hard.

So you like the idea of laughing so hard you break a rib and losing breakfast at the same time? I mean, I knew you were weird, but . . . .

Doc, I admire you for volunteering during Cino after your shoulder injury. I had planned to drive to Montana and camp while there, and I just don't think I'm going to be up for it. The ribs hurt more than the shoulder, to be honest, but they look less dramatic. Really bummed. This has been on my bucket list and I was really excited that I could finally go during the summer.

Well sh*t, Randy. I am so sorry this happened and that you will miss Cino. Let me know if you need anything. I don't mean food or pain killers - I'm guessing you have people for all that - I mean smuggling in replacement parts or bike porn or such. Although you could probably talk me into a grocery or pharmacy run if need be.

Please heal quickly, but also please don't rush back too fast.

So sorry to hear this and really do share your disappointment. This brings back memories of my July 3 2022 pre-CINO crash and recovery. You will have a painful Summer, but by this time next year, it will be a memory. Don

Randy didn't mention that this was in fact a two bike crash. He went down directly in front of me. I hit the brakes hard and flew over the handlebars, landing partly on Randy's bike and partly on the road beyond. Fortunately, I only have some mild road rash and a sore elbow and shin. The bikes got completely tangled up and made an interesting side-of-the-road sculpture...

Bloody Hell. I spent 4 years at Cal and I always follow your posts from around that area. So sorry to see that. Hope you heal well.

Is it too soon to ask the obvious question?

How are the bikes?

Looks like @iab can get a new pair of shoes...

Thanks for the kind words and sentiment. And Dave, sorry not mentioning your involvement in the misadventure. I was still coming down from a morphine high. It happened when I went to shift with my right hand, hit a big bump (dark. warped pavement), lost my grip of the bars with my left hand, and toppled over on top of my left shoulder. Before I came to a stop, Dave was doing a slow somersault over me.

@gugie, it’s never too early to ask about the bikes. Honestly, that was on my mind instantly. I’m really relieved both Dave & his Cooper weren’t hurt more badly. I still haven’t done a close inspection. It’s still in the back of my wife’s car. Definitely going to need new bars. I’ll report on the state next of the bike when I get motivated to get out of bed.

Thought nobody would ever ask! My bike is fine...in fact, I dusted myself off, straightened the handlebars and rode another 30 miles after the crash (Rule #5 in operation). Randy's handlebars were twisted into a pretzel-like condition, spoiling his beautiful taping job, but otherwise the bike looked OK.
