Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for a multi-day stage ride/race

I am looking for a multi-day stage ride or race. After watching the Barkley Marathons (which I realize is a running trail race) and then The Inferno on GCN, I became interested in doing something similar on the road bike. The Inferno might be a bit too challenging for me, not to mention the expense of getting across the pond. But if there was a similar multi-day race in North America, I might be interested in signing up.

Does anyone know of any rides that are either point to point OR that have the same starting location over several days? Ideally what I am looking for is a ride with check in points along the way and then after several days an accumulated time.

I think there are gavel races like this but I am not aware of any road races.

Thank you,

Not races, and you missed them for this year. https://candak.net is a stage ride across North Dakota. RAGBRAI is the (in)famous Registers Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.

There are a bunch of multi day rides in Minnesota that are pavement rides.

Try a web search for "bicycle race across<state>" with the state of your choice and you just may find something.

Also, this one https://www.cinorider.com/ is a gravel dirt road ride for older road bikes in Montana. I have hoped to ride it for several years but it has never worked with my schedule.

And https://the-damn.com/ is a one day 240 mile gravel race across Minnesota. Not a multi stage race, but a challenge, you betcha!

Thank you all for the recommendations. I will spend some time this winter looking at the routes/rides and start some planning for 2024. Thanks again.

I did Haut Route Alps last year, Haut Route Dolomites this year, and will likely do the Pyrenees next year. They are great, and challenging events. The Alps does many of the epic Tour De France climbs, and the Dolomites, the Giro de Italia.

if you can afford it, going with a tour operator to handle all the logistics is worth it. I really like https://www.twowheeltours.com.au/

I know of two fun relays in Utah.

One is called Kokopelli Relay. The route meanders through southern Utah for about 530 miles, from Moab to St. George. You can do it on a four person relay team, or solo.

The other is Salt to Saint (Salt Lake City to St. George). It's 400+ miles and also usually done on four person teams.

Probably not really what you're looking for, but maybe close. These take 24 to 30 hours or so. Each rider gets to ride several legs of ~20 to 50 miles per leg, and goes in the van when not riding. Like a Ragnar running relay, but for bikes

I did it in either '06 or '07, when it was called CANDISC.

Look into Cycle Oregon for next year. (This year's ride starts tomorrow.) It's a week-long event, but not a race. I have done it 4 times and have liked every one.

I see that they have really scaled back the crowd, at least this year. Used to host more than 2000 rider when it sold out (which it usually did). This year's event was capped at 1,350, at it doesn't look like it has sold out. Route changes every year. The route reveal is usually in January and then registration opens that same night. The last year I did it (2012), it sold out in about 20 min.
