Are Cannondales 3.0 worth overhauling?

I found one at a salvation army store. They want $50 for it, I probably can get it for $25. It seems in ok condition. Suntour shifters, sun Mistral rims. The frame seemed in excellent condition. I recently did a 1986 diamondback ascent, the one with the shiny chromed frame. I've been looking for an old road bike, kinda wanted a Peugeot, but this will work. I'm guessing it's been sitting in a garage for decades.

Yes. Especially if you get it for $25.

If you want to carve turns fast and furious, yes.

Peugeots and C-dales are generally 2 different animals so get one of each.

For sure. Welcome to the club. I picked one up while visiting family 1500 miles away. I restored it with new cables housings, tires, etc. and had a blast riding it all over North Texas. That 3.0 was so much fun, I looked for one here at home but an earlier 1986 model in great shape was priced right and is now in the regular rotation.

They were better bikes than the previous models - less vibration and really thoughtful geometry. I rode one for 20+ years.

Yes they are very good bikes and worth to be upgraded with modern componentry. They ride extremely well

Plus, that era had really nicely finished welds - everything just flowed together. That went away on later models.

I haven't ridden them back to back but I feel/felt no difference between my 58;cm 3.0 R600 and my 58cm SR800. My SR800 is a 1986 and the welds are finished as nice or better than my 1992 3.0 R600.
The op's bike might be the longer chainstay model?

I bought this one a couple of years ago. Serviced it and changed a few things. At some point, the fork was replaced with a steel one and the frame was repainted. It's a nice riding bike.

I didn't get it as cheap as the OP is shooting for, but I am happy with the purchase.

The handlebars have been changed out to a conventional bend since this picture was taken.

It's only worth it of you post lots of in process pictures to BF
Or at least an "as found" and an "after overhaul".

Love an older Cannondale, I have two. Awesome bikes, and we need to know if it's the racy one or the toury one.

I used to ride a Cannondale 1995 R900 2.8. Nice light bike, I put a Profile carbon fork on it to help smooth out the ride and save some weight over the standard Kinesis fork. That bike had the cantilevered seat stays which gave it a pretty unforgiving ride quality. I converted it to a city bike for my son when he went off to college. He still rides it and uses it to go get his groceries.
