dear carleton,

i have been getting the urge for a lightweight aluminum bike lately. do you have any experience with or knowledge of the cannondale capo1 frame? i had pretty much settled on a wabi lightning frame but i just ran across the c'dale locally & it sure is pretty. this would be for a "street fixie"

thanx, mark h

Carleton, I want a Wabi bike, too, but I'm looking at the polished steel version.

I like fixed gear bikes, I'm due for a new one. But I'm older - well, old - and I want a bike that sets me apart a little from the mass of young riders I in Los Angeles. Am I justified?

The Wabis will set you apart from most riders out here that either have horrid looking conversions or expensive track frames with crap parts

Just avoid looking like this

and that should set you apart from the rest of the 70s revivalists.

It's hard to remember. I think I go farther back than the 70s, though. The 1870s, maybe.

Dude, your age will set you way apart from the other fixed gear riders. Any bike you ride will be auto-badass! The only guy you have to worry about is TT.

Ride the bike that makes you happy. That will set you apart from lots of people. Who cares what others think? Do you.

carleton, I know you're not a personal shopper, but what is your take on Argon18 and more specifically they're stack bike the electron? A while back, my lbs owner and I were chatting about my new bike Leader Kagero and he asked why I would spend that much money on a leader. I asked what he would get for track IKEA around that price tangent and one that he said was Argon 18.

The Argon 18 Electron is a nice bike. Nothing special. It's a great entry level, all-around bike like many others.

(You can put those wheels on any bike)

Maybe the LBS likes it because it's not common. It's not rare or hard to get. It's just a bike that you don't see all the time.

What are your thoughts on the Leader Kagero? Viable track bike (I'm sure any track bike is viable)?

I'd like an experienced track racers input on my bike!

I can't find any geometry info on the Leader website. Can you provide a link or the info? I'd like to know

- BB drop
- Head Tube Angle
- Seat Tube Angle
- Fork Rake (or fork model where I can look up the rake)

Those 4 things affect how the bike behaves on the track.

I think that frame has a forward sloping (pursuit) top tube, but maybe not as extreme as the Cinelli Mash. Scrod sells them so he can confirm or deny this.

I will definitely try. I'm in no way saying I'll know every little detail on how the bike feels, since it'll be the first time I even step near a velodrome, but I hope it'll be a great experience.

And TT there is a light slope in the top tube. Actually I don't know why but in some pictures it doesn't look that apparent, but in others and in person to me it looks about as steep as the Cinelli Mash.

I also decided to invest in spd-sl's instead of spd's.

Do you mean their actual footspeed (the speed at which their feet are moving in a circle)? Or their cadence?

Dear Carleton,

Do you think it's wise to attempt to start racing this season having broken both clavicles in the last 12 months? Should I play it safe and wait until next year? Are accidents fairly common while racing on the Velodrome?

If you are healed up, what's the problem?

Accidents are actually rare on the velodrome. There are more accidents in road racing and crits per race than on the velodrome.

Yeah I had heard of how common they are in road races, that's why I was worried.

I'm healed enough to ride, but if I fall on either one within the next few months, I will likely break the hell out of it again.

Does my 722ts seem like a pretty decent starting platform for my first year? I'm getting rid of the Kilo, it's a bit small on me. If it turns out that I want to pursue racing, I'll probably pick up a TK2 or something next year.
