Copper and brass are the best and have nice, long-resonating rings. Copper is a wee bit more high pitched. The aluminum one sounds a little dull.

When determining the widest tire I can fit on a frame, is it as simple as throwing a set of calipers back there to see what will fit (assuming my wheel will accommodate a wider tire, that is)?

Scrod - Have you ever had Porteur style handlebars on your 77 Fuji? If so, how did you like it compared to the bars with some rise that you have in your pedal room pics?
I don't have experience with either and am just looking for some insight as I'm aiming to turn my Fuji into a townie.

aside from industry standard changing way back, the debate on weight savings, ability to mount gear, etc...
do they exist for the sole purpose of the vintage and history? they seem to be more common in track bikes
was curious if there was some history or something i was missing

It is not possible to use an outboard bearing BB with Sugino 75s. I'm using a Phil Wood square taper BB w/ 108mm ISO spindle.

Yes, you can safely install a freewheel on any hub having fixed threading.

Find a shop where the owner isn't a jerk and the employees are cool (which may be the hardest part). Start hanging out a bit, explain that you want to learn how to work on bikes and ask for an internship. Chances are you'll be the guy who fixes flats and takes out the garbage for a while but if the shop is cool and you're into learning things, you'll gain some experience and maybe even make a bit of money.
Sure, you can go to school and become certified - which may help you land a job at shops where it's a requirement - but I know more than a few techs who have completed school and like to talk a good game but are total idiots when it comes to actually working on bicycles.

I know there's a seeming hatred towards the Thickslick, but i've been pleased with the two i've owned. Only concern is how sluggish they feel. My lbs just so happens to have a 700x25 folding version with the red lettering on sale and i was wondering if the reduced weight would help to improve upon the tire's lackluster rolling abilities.

Do you have any miles on the Fyxation Curve Saddle? I know you're running a Turbo on your Thunderdome and they seem to be fairly similar in style. I'm looking for a white saddle for my bike and the Fyxation comes up time and time again in my searches. I know RG carries them so I didn't know if you'd used one or not. Seems the white Turbos command a bit of a premium via the auction site, but the Curve looks to be an interesting, much less expensive option.
Thoughts on the Curve?
Also, on the Cane Creek brake levers, are the Tan Hoods fairly similar to the tan used on gumwall tires? A lot of the images online make them look pretty dark. I know I'm being superficial and stupid, but... well, colors, man.
