Yeah, I'm still not seeing anything in the Boston forecast, other than some lower temperatures, and the "10 day" now extends all the way into March 3

Weather Channel is predicting an abbreviated Polar Vortex for the last week of February (Thursday into Saturday) for much of the country

wonder if that might lead to a surprise snow squall? was sad to hear 2 ppl were killed Wednesday in a massive 200 car pileup that shut down a major highway just outside Montreal. The crash was caused by a "strong" snow squall coming from the St. Lawrence River that "suddenly" generated a total lack of visibility for drivers. There were 2 snow clearing operations earlier in the day Wednesday & the area is not known to be accident-prone. Approx 50 vehicles were "completely crushed" during the series of crashes. ;-(

Also 200 car pileup around Montreal I read about.
We have no real snow to speak of in the Valley right now, it's still VERY COLD at might.

Not much snow this winter. Enough has melted that I'm going back to road riding on a nearby highway on the warmer days since I have a clear ice free route to get to it. Still a far way off the crazy warm 2016 season where I did over 1,000 km in Feb.
Enough ice in the city that studs are needed, but enough clear roads that they aren't fun to have on. Fat bike is definitely off the table unless we get more snow. Warming back up tomorrow, so I'll be back out on the highway.

On my road rides since the weekend I've been getting friendly honks from a few passing cars. Probably other cyclists not up to riding in 3C weather. Nice thing about riding in winter is its very easy to take advantage of a "warm" day, being acclimatized to cool weather and having the gear.
All in all a pretty mild winter, I've rarely had to use my heavy wind proof tights. Though the heavy use of my, "good to -4C" tights is starting to wear them out.

Currently stuck in annoying weather mode this week. Light snow / rain every evening has ensured the roads have been constantly wet all week. I still got some decent rides in despite the mess, but have been forced to do drive train wipe downs after each one.
Enough snow tonight that it might be worth taking the fat bike out for the first time in a few weeks if for no other reason than not having to worry about all the hidden frozen rut remnants. I might get one road ride in on Friday before a potential biggest snow of the winter hits Saturday. Double digit celsius one day, snow the next. Maybe that new fat bike chainring should be on the bike instead of my desk.

Hahahaha, In my opinion, coming from a 12-month-a-year commuting cyclist (until I get a car), we were spared! I think St. Christopher, patron saint of travelers, who is technically NOT a canonized saint, has performed us in Boston a miracle by giving us such a mild winter.

How it is in CA:
https://www.latimes.com/california/s...-miracle-march
"Forecasters Hopeful" is a problem with newspapers and what they think of forecasters
The Tahoe snow blog is calling it an "active pattern" but forecasting inches, not feet of snow for the next few weeks.

My local cycling club is having their annual Chili Ride this Saturday. With snow possible tomorrow evening, and a forecast high temp of 45 on Saturday (25° at ride start) , I'm gonna pass on the riding bit. My bikes are NOT snow- or road-salt ready. I might take some of my Chili for the cook-off (and post-ride luncheon) My usual batch is about 25-30 pounds....

I carried mail for 33 years. I learned years ago not to eat when it is cold outside. Your body's blood will go to your digestive system instead of the extremities (fingers/toes), and you'll only feel colder. I learned to eat lunch when I was done! If I started to feel cold, I'd move faster to get the blood moving, and to the extremities!
Same goes for riding. Blood will try to process the food you eat, rather than the muscles needed for cycling. Eat several hours or even better the day before a long ride, then eat after. Not during.
Oh, and they were putting road salt down at 6:30 this morning, in preparation for temps dropping through the freezing mark mid-day -- and snow accumulation tonight.
Nope, I'm definitely NOT riding tomorrow! But I'll still take some chili for the post-ride meal/chili competition afterwards!

Today we had the interesting situation where the sun was intense enough to melt the snow on unsalted roads even with the temperature several degrees below freezing. Water that hits the bike freezes instantly in a continuous process that forms big chunks of ice.
We are stuck in a series of temperature swings at the moment. -10C yesterday, just below freezing today, a few above freezing days, then back to -14C on the weekend. I'd like it to get warm enough for a complete melt down on the roads, there is a lot of ice around still.
