I have finally started my own work on the home, too. So far, it's basically been a process of unburying myself from the boxes and boxes of new tools. I just don't have the room to put anything anywhere, so I've been building shelves for the the existing basement crap so that I can clear enough room so that I can build work benches to accommodate the tools so that I can build the kitchen cabinets and whatnot. Fun fun.

Just the other day I was thinking about what a joy it is to be past the phase of after school activities for your child. OMG what a rat race to be driving around like crazy getting your kids to soccer practice and karate practice and baseball practice and boy scouts and all the other madness that affords parents only one day's rest, Sunday. The horror.

So glad to be well past that, makes the rest of child rearing seem like a vacation.

Of the kitchen when it's all said and done? Or of the basement work space?

Kitchen will be a while, but I hope that it'll be done to a level of satisfaction that I wouldn't be bothered by sharing pics.

The basement is just a mess. I think that I'll get a workable work space, but it's certainly going to be a compromise - it's an older house and it's an old-school basement with uneven concrete floors (one of the reasons that I'm going to build permanent work tables - anything movable will need to be leveled and stabilized each time it's moved), not much ceiling height (I can already tell that I've got a few months of bald head cuts and bruises ahead of me - I'm seriously considering a helmet of some sort). I had always wanted to build a nice woodworking bench down there, one that would be geared primarily towards hand tool usage, but this is already making me reconsider... we'll see.

Wow, so what a wild past few days.

Highlights: Camping did occur Saturday and Sunday night. I had to get on a plane early Monday, so I stayed part of Saturday night and came back a little bit on Sunday.

Sunday was a calm spring day in the low 70's. Got a nice drive in the El Camino to the state park about 50 or so minutes round trip. Did a 46 mile bike ride in the afternoon/early evening. It was gloriuous and I felt pretty good after the ride. Still trying to prep for my 30 mile gravel "race" wherein I will go as hard as I can but will still be badly beaten.

Flew to NYC and stayed in a fancy hotel because two co workers were already booked there. Had good couple of meetings on Tuesday. Hit up the Rapha store to look at shoes/jerseys and then to Rudy's Music to check out guitars. Ate all the wrong things and too much of them. Wasn't in my preferred part of town, so I didn't hit up my usual spots. Got a bagel from a different place in the morning and it was so massive that it sat heavy all day and made every meal thereafter feel like a chore, but everything was SO GOOD I still ate too much.

Had to get up at stupid early o'clock (4:45 am NY time which is 3:45 my time) to get on the subway and catch an early flight. And after so many incident free trips over the past couple of years, I had my first real hairy situation on the subway at 5:30 am when a bunch of idiot teens nearly jumped a homeless guy because of an earlier verbal confrontation between the guy and a girl from the group of teenagers. They stopped the train and an MTA official had to come break things up. It almost got real ugly. I'm just trying to get to JFK man...

Made it home.

EDIT: OH yeah, and I got stuck with a 2.5 hour layover in Charlotte and I think someone here was just talking about the lack of food options. Well, there are a ton of options there, but yeah none of them were spectacular. If anyone has a recommendation, I'm sure I could use it. I always end up there if I have a connecting flight to NYC.

On the scalp front, I will say that my earmuff-style hearing protection does offer a bit of head protection, too - I've bumped ducting a few times with them on and no problems.

More importantly, I've become fond of not hearing my family calling out for me, so much so that I've taken to wearing my wireless earbuds while cooking. It's a lot easier to get things done when you're not constantly being interrupted.
