The Barber of Seville

This is classic and vintage, I guess, although it has nothing to do with bicycles.

The Metropolitan Opera is offering free streaming of a different opera every night while everyone is stuck at home. Tonight is The Barber of Seville, which is one of the great crowd-pleasers of all time. It's basically a musical comedy with some really rousing music. If you've never seen an opera, this is a good one to start with.

All you have to do is go to metopera.org and click on the "watch now" button. A clever person could figure out how to stream it on a big-screen tv, but I'm not that person--I just watch on my laptop. The sound is great through headphones.

I think it becomes available a 7 PM, and will stay up until Wednesday at about 6 PM. You can start and stop it as often as you want in that time. Go ahead, I dare you--try watching the first half-hour. If you hate it, you can go do something else. But you might like it. Stranger things have happened.

Yeah, I always heard that The Barber was Fausto Coppi's favorite opera. That's the one way in which I am like Fausto Coppi.

This is from an SF Opera production, but unsure of the date -- found it on the web. Thank you for posting about the broadcast tonight -- we often listen to the Sunday Met Opera broadcasts and have a lot of opera on vinyl, so I think we'll enjoy this with our kids.

If anyone wants to look it up, there's also an episode where Sylvester the cat sings (with a bunch of ghost cats) the sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor. Now there's a good opera. Bloody, though.

My wife was a coloratura soprano with both the Vancouver and Canadian Opera Companies. La Ci Darem La Mano was one of the first operatic songs/duets I'd ever witnessed up close and it blew my hair back, just like a Maxell tape. Then we got married.

Really? That is so cool! Does your wife still perform at all or at least sing around the house? It would be a shame not to use a voice like that if you have it. Give her my regards.

I'm not all that well versed in opera--I'm more enthusiastic than I am knowledgeable. I had to look up that duet. But I really liked Don Giovanni, so I must have heard it. I'll have to find that song on youtube to refresh my memory.

Her last public performance was a few months ago in a chorale ensemble at the University in our town. She's 62 and the rigors of practise are just too much. I think very few people understand the physicality of a classical singer.
She's got relative pitch so she can harmonize with any song perfectly, without thought, so I always have singing in my life. That's a gift that I've taken for granted too often.

Me, I suck. My last solo was Feeling Groovy in the grade 8 choir and everyone laughed at me. Ha!

Yeah, I have heard that performing with a major opera company is really, really hard work--like being an NBA player in terms of the amount of work and practice you have to put in. But even if you no longer sing at that super-intense level it's still a great thing to be able to do.

I can't sing, either. I have often wished I could. But I sure do like to listen.

jon,
Thanks for the heads up! Another great performance and as always, just another day at the Met. My favorite booth person here at IU's Musical Arts Center performed at the Met, and stoopid me I asked what metro station she performed at (think Joshua Bell playing as a busker in the tunnels). For me great musical memories of Breaking Away and the work that went into it. Thanks for posting. Smiles, MH

Thank you for the tip. We are 20-year season ticket holders with San Diego Opera, and we were looking forward to a live performance of "Barber of Seville" in late April / early May. (Our son and daughter-in-law go on opening night while we watch the kiddies, then we go a week later for the closing matinee.)

This is actually the "Barber of Seville". He is also a cyclist. I got my haircut when my wife and I stopped in Seville while riding through Spain as part of a 3-month ride.

Excellent! I would guess that all barbers in Seville get tired of people asking them to sing, etc. Were you able to resist the temptation to do that?

Also, I just checked an online national phone directory and found that there are at least 14 people in the US named Barbara Seville. I bet they all got teased about it in middle school.
