I carry a wakizashi that is sheathed along my seat stay. I figure if the dog is coming at me, it wants seppuku and I can give it an honorable death.

Seriously though, while I have never been chased by a dog my friend's dog goes aggressive psycho whenever I come by with the bike. It takes quite a bit of time after I've dismounted to calm her down again. I think it's the fact that you look more like a threat. You look bigger and are moving much faster and no longer have the same shape as a normal person does.

Most counties require that dogs be "under control."

County ordinances typically define under control very clearly - fenced, tethered, invisible fence, or a trained and registered hunting dog under voice control at all times and the dog's master must have his hunting permit with him.

If a dog is running down the road along side your bike then they are not under control. There might not be a leash law but that doesn't mean your dog can run loose.

Ride with a couple witnesses and you could get their house in a lawsuit
if they don't have insurance to cover the settlement .

I like the way you think, that's even better than my idea of getting hit by a beer truck belonging to a major distributor.

A dog doesn't have to attack you to be a danger. A dog playfully chasing may cut in front of you and cause you to crash. A local college professor died that way a couple years ago while riding on a MUP.

Rarely encounter dogs and haven't been chased for more than a short distance, maybe I'm lucky, Been meaning to pick up some pepper spray just in case I come across one that is determined.

For those who encounter dogs regularly would be interesting to see how they'd respond to tossing back some Beggin' strips, those things are like crack to dogs in most situations. If that doesn't work you can always progress to pepper spray, handgun, squeaky toy stuffed with grenade, etc...

The problem with that approach is that you would be reinforcing the bicycle-chasing behavior: chase a bike, get a treat! Yay!

I don't think that's a good idea.

^This is exactly true. And while I wouldnt personally carry a gun, I can see why someone would. Do a quick Google search and it's easy to find some real horror stories of riders being attacked by aggressive dogs. Some posters in this thread are acting like anyone who carries some way of defending themselves is over the top crazy and paranoid. Those posters are clueless, quite frankly. Just because you have never been chased down and pulled off your bike doesnt mean it never happens. And yeah, I put all this entirely on the owners, who let their dogs run free.

we have controls, it's called "leash laws".

My other control is to avoid nightclubs, be it France, or FL.

Agreed. Most dogs are not an immediate threat but I am prepared for those that are. I do not carry a gun in CA but do carry pepper gel and a collapsible asp.
I am neither a hero or a coward when it pertains to self-defense.

actually the most humane thing, is for dog owners to control and train their pets.

dog owner = responsibility for dog

maybe we should ban dogs, since dog owners can't be responsible. I mean dog owners should have background checks, apply for permits, etc... owning a dog isn't exactly a right.

This is the third topic on the same dubject in a week, but only this one has progressed to suggest carrying small arms and shooting thr dogs. This reinforces all the negative stereotypes about the US and its gun culture of violence, plus makes a frightening read.

I suggest not merely closing the topic, but suggesting those advocating carrying weapons are given a short holiday to consider the implications of their suggestions.

Homebrew deleted a portion of a previous post of his that was arguably racist as being off topic. Guess that's what he's referring to. That post has an edit note clearly stating which mod did the editing.

Well, I've long been a very vocal advocate of pepper spray as an effective and humane way to deal with dogs.

I'm heading out as soon as the thunderstorm passes and will be carrying a canister of Sabre Red Pepper Gel.

I recommend that @C.Jester in Alabama and everyone else do the same and then follow up with a report to the local county animal control office.

Tell me, do you cut a notch on your handlebar after every successful spray?

Incidentally, spraying a dog with pepper is hardly humane.
