Help sizing tires.
I am currently running 700x30c tires and have the clearance for, and would like to install 700x40c's . Having never jumped this much in width is there a limit to how wide a tire I can go on a given rim? I have disc brakes and plenty of room at the seat and chain stays but is there a rim width I can not exceed? Thanks in advance and I do have a micrometer so I can measure the rim if necessary.

Tires: Schwalbe Spicer, 700x30c, puncture protection, reflective sidewall
Bike: Cannondale Quick 3, 2018.
I would like to know if a 40c will work on these rims or would I have to buy new?
Rode a Topstone last Friday, 2019 Cannondale Apex, and liked how the larger tires and lower pressure felt on the road.

Yes, you can almost certainly run 40mm tires on those rims. The inner width of the rims is probably something like 15-17mm, and these will support 40mm tires. They'd be on the narrow end of the range, but it should work.
I have 42mm tires on 15mm internal width rims on my Trek, and it works great.

I was surprised that the wheels on my 29er style MTB were no wider than the wheels on my Trek FX 7.0 Alpha. & the MTB holds 2.25 Riddlers just fine. I think your limiting factor will be the frame
