Success with a Saris Bones 2 and my Terratrike Cruiser

Yay! I was pleased with my first trip taking the Terratrike Cruiser on a Saris Bones 2 rack. I was somewhat dismayed after purchasing my trike that no reasonably priced car racks (for a small car) were available.

I purchased the Saris rack and it worked really well. I know it's not designed for recumbents but I was pleased that I was able to make it work without compromising the rack itself, the safety of the trike or the car or people around me.

Keep in mind that I have a small Terratrike. I don't think the ground clearance would be adequate if you had a larger trike on the Honda Civic. What I do is set the trike on the rack so that it is resting on the "T" of the wheel base. The trike rikes vertical and on the Civic with the small frame I still have about a foot of clearance from the ground.

I used rope and a good strong strap running through my trunk and to the trike as an extra precaution. I don't like the idea of relying on those little hook things alone.

Roads around here are bumpy and hilly and I checked the setup after nine miles and all was secure. I'm really pleased because I need to cycle on the flat or semi flat before I can tackle my commute on the hills.

Saris racks are great, and I have carried CLWB Bents on them for years. They last forever too....

Do you have a photo of your trike on the rack?

I too carry my Catrike Villager on a Saris Bones 2 rack. Works great on my MINI Cooper. I tie down the seat back to the rear spoiler.

The Utah Trikes site suggests using the Saris Sentinal 2 Car Rack. How does this rack compare to the Saris Bones?

Sorry for the delay. Each time I try to resize the photo to fit Photobucket skunks up my computer. I hope the links are OK. Once I post I'll check them.

Ahh good...worked. The top photo shows how the bike sits on my Honda Civic. It's a small Terra Trike Cruiser so folks with a small car and a larger trike might have clearance problems.

Here is how I attached the trike to the rack. It's sitting on the top holder and the arms are high in the air. I added extra rope from around the trunk because I didn't completely trust the little clampy feet that the Saris comes with.

I stabilized the front wheels and if I was doing to drive a looong way I'd probably remove the seat.

Sorry for the zombie thread everyone. I had forgotten all about it.

This rack system is still working just fine after five years. I know that the Saris Bones wasn't recommended for trikes but I honestly couldn't find any other thing available at the time.

I'd love to find something that was made for a small car and a trike (not a roof rack) but so far I've not had any luck. Has anyone come up with any new ideas since I first posted?
