ANGi

No, not the Stones song. ANGi is a gizmo that Specialized brought out to alert your family/friends if you are in a crash. I recently bought a new helmet and it has this gizmo on it. I just activated it and it seems to work. I have not tried it on the road just yet. Most of my rides are club/group rides and I won't even use it, but I sometimes do ride solo and plan to run it for those occasional solo rides.

Anyone using it?

I believe there is a way for it to email your contacts of your location every 5 minutes (even if you are NOT in a crash) but I don't see how to turn this option on/off. I do see it sends an email when a ride is started/stopped and that worked on my 0.0 mile "test ride" when I set device up.

Oh, nevermind. I read up dcrainmaker's review and the device allows your contacts to log into a site that shows your position every 5 minutes.

That said, feel free to post your experience if you wish.

iPhone has a native app called “FindFriends” it shows your location every minute and it’s free. Also cycling computers have a track option as well. I believe Garmin uses the accelerometer to notify recipients in you are involved in a crash, Wahoo notifies recipients when a ride is started and also allows one to track. All free...When I saw this advertised earlier from Specialized, I was wondering what they were thinking and who they were targeting with this subscription based capability. Everyone has a phone.

^ All good points. I don't know if I would have bought this but it came with the new helmet I needed (Prevail II MIPS) and includes a 1 year subscription so it's no additional cost to me.

In their defense, I don't know how well the Garmin crash sensor/alert system works, and a head/helmet based one makes more sense to me.

Would I have bought the thing if it did not come with my helmet? No. But since I have it, I will likely use it at least on solo rides.

The Garmin crash detection sucks, as in alerts when I sprint for a segment and then stop (no hard braking) at the next red light. I don't have ANGi but Specialized changed the pricing model to no longer require a subscription.

I usually defend Garmin because I think they suck a little bit less than everyone else thinks. But I've literally never heard a good thing about their crash detection.

RoadID has a free crash detection app that works really well. I have it on my iPhone and tested it by dropping my bike in the yard and it sent me an email as soon as it detected that the phone, mounted on the handlebar, had taken a jolt and did not move for the set time.
