'76 Raleigh Grand Prix - almost done - quill and brake Q's

Hi Everyone, I'm almost done with my Raleigh Grand Prix conversion that I inherited. Previous posts on this located here: Raleigh Rebuild.

I am about to purchase a few final parts and need help on the quill stem and brakes.

I am looking at a long reach caliper brake to work with my 700cc wheels i moved over. I think this will work, can anyone confirm? Brake I read through Sheldon's website and i think they said a 65mm is required up front with a 700cc wheel. THe wheels are stock from Kilo TT I moved over.

For the quill stem, i measured the one i took off (i am replacing because i spread the handlebar opening) and it was 146mmx80mm at least how i measured it. Should i get 100x50 or 180x60? 25.4 or 26mm bar opening? I thiink 100x50 with 25.4mm but would like to confirm. quill stem

I broke the original leather brown brook saddle htat was on this bike, i was riding it on my kilo last year and the leather eventually tore off the front. any cheap good looking saddles anyone can recommend? should i get a new seatpost with integrated seat adapter or just get a new adapter to go onto the existing seat post?

Brake reach is pretty easy to figure out -- just measure from the brake hole on your frame/fork to the rim. Stem length really just depends on how much reach you need to get the fit you want.

Thanks. I was more concerned about the vertical length being too long for the head tube. i guess i could measure, but was also hoping someone here had experience rebuilding this frame.

Any thoughts on 25.4 vs 26?

Thanks again!

A 26.0 clamp stem gives you the choice of running either 26.0 or 25.4 bars, so it is nice to have that option. You'll just have to use a shim if you're going to run a 25.4 handlebar.

I used exactly the same stuff on the '84 Raleigh Sportif I rebuild to a commuter bike:

quill: Origin 8 classqiue, got the 180x60x26.0. I ended up cutting 2cm off the length after about 2 years to lower it though. YMMV.
brakes: tektro R559 long reach - slapped these on with zero issue. still going after 3000+ miles and almost 4 years. there is plenty of adjustability with the shoes and plenty of clearance.

You can find plenty of pics of the bike on my instagram

I got the Tektren Brake and levers are long enough but the bolt that connects through the steer tube is too short. I cant get the axle nut through the opening either because its diameter is larger than the opening. The original brake bolt went all the way through and had a nut on the other side.

Thoughts on how to get this mounted? Open up the hole with a drill bit?

Yeah, should be a simple matter to drill it out. I've never done one myself, but people who do tools stuff always say it's pretty easy: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...ed-brakes.html
