These are gorgeous and yet because I was just thinking about my tweenager years, they made me think of my bike-hoarding, junk-collecting, CRV-redeeming grandpa, who would set out for a bike ride into the desert every morning with a plastic bag strung on his handlebars to bring home his haul.

What say we derail this into another sewing machine thread, eh?
Or a cat thread.

Or a cats using sewing machines thread....

C'mon.

If only there were an easy way to remove and discard the inside of the cat, you could use the outside as a bag. No sewing required.

My friend David, a Vermont-based randonneur, has started a bike bag fabrication side-business. His attention to detail is superb, and his bags have a very well constructed and finished look and feel:

I recently taught myself to sew and have made a few bags for myself and some tool rolls for other people. All on an entry-level Singer Simple which seems to be enough for my needs, for now.

Small frame bag and tool roll:

Figuring out the size so it could still clear 2 bottles on my very compact cx bike:

Rando bag:

Tool roll w/ elastic closure:

Beautiful examples of handwork in this thread.

So much talent.

Heh Sophia, got time to build one (handlebar bag) this winter for me?

If you start building those I'm in.

My wife would love one for her Stumpjumper.

Remind me a bit of Swifts and that's a good thing.

yeah it took me watching a bunch of videos a bunch of times to figure out how to properly set up the bobbin. everyone had their cameras in the wrong place or their hands in the way it seemed.

Top notch looking creations, WW. And the day-glo fabric really makes you visible!

I'd consider it, Grady... I certainly have enough time on my hands. Let me know what you have in mind via PM if you like.

I covet this bag.

The big one on the back is an exact copy of an old English bag. Sometimes you see bags like this bearing the Schwinn brand.

The one in front is customized for the Soma 'Lauterwasser' bar, and I now have it on my commuter bike.

I've made a couple other bags, more or less by the same method, not always successful.

you can get vinyl sheeting from Menard's, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. would be easier than ordering it online and all that.

I'm getting ready to start making these which I call a"Bicycle Billfold". I've got over a dozen cut out and partially sewn. I'm planning on selling them loaded already with a multi-tool, patch kit with tire levers and a tube. Just attach and ride. Nice little pocket to toss a few bucks, credit/debit card or whatever. Removes in second and toss in the back of your jersey just like a wallet. With it loaded it's about 2.5" thick and can fit it into my back pocket of my shorts.

well i finished my first tool roll. definitely have some issues to work out with the tension/timing of my machine because the seams would look great on the top but the underneath side would be sloppy. hopefully i'll get things figured out before i make my next attempt
