Or any other small plastic container that can take the abuse.

BTW... I'm heading to Vegas and I think I can buy Acetone in NV.

Gatorade bottle(s) and chain quickie link. Great chain cleaning tool(s). No need to overthink it.

Had to replace jockey and idler wheels on people's bikes because they used fancy on bike cleaner machines. They seem to wash the lube out of the pulleys really well and if water based cleaner was used the rust forms in the bushing / bearing. Just be aware.

Good luck

I don't think you need "the best" chain cleaner, just "good enough". Anti-chain cleaner guys are always saying how it really doesn't help extend life of chain or whatever. Really all I want is... not filthy... and easy to use.

In theory, no. In practice, yes. If you want to follow the “theory”, the link is pretty cheap.

that's for a card of 6 I think.. so if each link lasts for one chain, it's $8 per chain.

Note that link is only for 11 speed. All of the others listed from 6 to 12 speed are “supposed” to be singl use only. Most links are supposed to be used only once.

I've noticed that most quick links for up to 8 speeds are "officially" (by manufacturer recommendation) OK to be reused, while 9-10-11-12 are more often recommended to be used only once.

The explanation is that (outer) plate material is thicker with lower speed chain, so any damage when dis/connecting a quick link still leaves enough material to hold securely.

Have I re-used the "many speed" ones? Yes, it was fine. Would I recommend it? Only with a warning that it's at one's own risk.

..pun intended, here's a couple more links.. I'm not sure where you get your info? This is from a manufacturer's site.

I think the simple answer is really, eg. for KMC anyway, that they sell both Reusable and Non-Reusable variants. Read the product descriptions for the answer.

Exactly.
And when buying 10s KMC chains in the past, I've randomly found either kind included.

A jar with a lid and 1/4 of kerosene. Dump in chain, wait 5 minutes, shake for 1 minute, Pick out and dry chain.

I stand corrected. However, in my defense, only one of the links is marked “reusable” like the 11 speed chain. You have to read all of the descriptions to find out which are reusable and which aren’t. And, as I said above, most links from other companies are meant for a single use. They can be reused in practice but the manufacturers say they are only good for a single use.

Agree - it's from product to product. As a (more) general rule - the more speeds, the more of them are one-use only, at least from what I've seen (always read the fine print, especially when installing components for others).

I remove chain, put in jar with mineral spirits, shake a bit, let soak, shake more, then pull out and wipe clean. Sometimes a second jar with clean mineral spirits is used.

I'm probably going to switch to simple green. A bit more environmentally friendly, and the smell isn't as toxic

Don’t be fooled into thinking that Simple Green is more environmentally friendly. You’ll need much more Simple Green to do the same job. While you can use about 1/2 cup of mineral spirits to clean a chain a dozen times, you’ll need more like 2 cups of Simple Green to clean one chain. Plus you’ll need to remove the Simple Green before you relubricate the chain. That means 2 to 4 times the amount of Simple Green or 4 to 8 cups of water. And then you need to get rid of the water either by heating the chain or by chasing the water with a solvent like alcohol or acetone. You won’t need much of either but you’ll need some. Once you do all the washing and rinsing and drying, you’ve created a much larger volume of waste than if you just used mineral spirits.

Finally, the “smell” isn’t what is toxic. It’s the components. Deodorized mineral spirits contains hydrocarbons which have a low toxicity. Use gloves, of course, but you should use gloves when handling Simple Green as well.

I'm new to cycling but have been around chains most of my life in the ag field. Just what does a top of the line chain for a bike cost? Just an outside perspective but keeping a chain clean and lubed will save the cassette and crank set. But taking a chain off and soaking in solvent seems like a pile of work.

Let the crud settle to the bottom. Later, slowly and carefully pour the solvent into a "new" Gatorade bottle. Discard the old bottle with the layer of crud on the bottom.

You can expedite the process, too-- right after you clean the chain, swizzle a magnet around in the bottle, and sit in surprise at how much of that crud is metal.

Collect it in a recycled glass jar with at lid and let it sit still, and you can reuse the solvent several times. In the end you should dispose of it at your city collection place. Ppl tend to forget they shouldn't dispose of simple green in the drain either, if its contaminated with oil.
