I just wanted to post a quick thank you to southpawboston for the excellent photos in posts #16 and #75. The bikes are beautiful, and you clearly know what you're doing with a camera. They were very helpful.

Also, thanks to auchencrow for the cartoon in post #71 -- that was hysterical!

i agree that southpawboston's pics are stunning, and show up-close detail to good effect. I'm curious to see pictures of the same bikes, but side-views of the entire machines...

please?

Meh, just because I have all those aluminum fender-clad bikes doesn't mean that plastic (aka SKS) can't look good, too:

For these SKS, i drilled out the rivets securing the front bracket on the fender, and in place of it used...you guess it...a Daruma bolt:

These required just as much drilling and finagling as aluminum fenders. The SKS and Planet Bike fenders do seem more bombproof than the Honjos or VOs, but they don't install as nicely and the fenderlines are never quite as perfect.

Okay I'll say it now, your signature is obnoxious. At least make it regular size.

I hope this confession doesn't get me banned from the C&V forum, but I'm installing the VO 700c 45 fenders (nice deal at $28) on my 60 cm Cross Check. After seeing southpawboston's work, I'm determined to use the daruma bolt. I have everything set up, and I love how the daruma bolt attachment looks, BUT:

The fork crown is awfully high on my Cross Check fork, even compared to my Pasela 700 x 35 tires, and I think that's the reason I'm getting a lame fender line. This is especially true because I'm pulling the fender in quite a bit with the stays in order to avoid too much toe-clip overlap.

Anyone have any tricks for elegantly extending a daruma-bolt attachment a centimeter or so below the fork crown?

gotta ask, entirely respectfully, why anyone would "ban" you for putting current-year taiwanese fenders on a late-model taiwanese frame?

Sounds bout-perfect, to me. I've yet to use a daruma bolt, but a few bucks at the hardware shop, paired with some patience and ingenuity, goes a long way...

Of course, someone else on here probably has some empirical advice for ya.

My SKS 2" Chromoplastics were tougher to install on my commuter than the On-Sale VO's for my father's Christmas present Atala IGH.

Planet bike is the way to go if you want simple and functional.

I think the extra effort is worth the sharp look of nice fenders. Here's a video of my install.

dang dude ease up, let's talk about fenders.
I had honjos on my mclean, they were somewhat tricksy to install but ran tight and quiet. I'll probably put them back on for the cirque show in may, even though I really don't ride in the rain.

I admitted in an earlier reply that they did indeed run quiet, but my problem was with the alterations that had to be made just to get them almost right. Like I mentioned just knowing they had been radically altered screwed with my brain pan! LOL! BTW, I could ease up but I don't think I will at the moment. No disrespect. =0)
