I have a Tigre America Road Bike and I have never seen another like it. I've never even seen another bike called "Tigre"

From the original suntour derailleur I was able to determine that the bike was built in July of 1979

If anybody has any other information, knows how much it is worth, or has even seen another please let me know!

Can you read the decal near the top of the seat tube? Place of Manufacture?

I'm going to somewhat disagree with Vonruden.

That bike is actually quite hard to classify, and has a mix of features. My guess is that it was a special production for a small local vendor that was never distributed nationwide in the USA. Is it possible that the bike was originally sold in Mexico or South America?

The Good:

• Lugged Construction
• Chrome Headtube Lugs
• Forged rear dropouts (Campy Style?)
• Alloy Cotterless Crank (odd 3 arm style).
• Alloy Seatpost
• Aluminum alloy rims
• Relatively straight fork curve.
• A few braze-ons
• Front Quick Release, and maybe also rear.

The Bad:

• Fake Fork Crown (poorly matched to the crown).
• Stem Shifters
• Top bar brake levers
• Pretty wide rims (single wall?)
• Rusty Spokes (most of that era would have been galvanized, but those appear to be in bad shape).
• Seatstay caps look pretty crude.
• HUGE spoke protector
• Chrome chainguard/bashguard.
• Derailleur cable housing from downtube to the bottom of the front derailleur.

Other than the spokes mentioned above, the bike appears to be in pretty good shape. Although if things like the tires are old, it could probably use a good tune-up plus consumables.


The lack of waterbottle bosses and center pull brakes would be consistent with a late 70's bike.


Around here, I'd expect a bike like that to go for around $150. Maybe even $200. At least the asking price.

The bike has all the markings of a Japanese contract brand. The Japanese were always coming up with silly names like Tigre instead of just using Tiger because of USA copyright laws. If it's got a K stamped on the bottom bracket it was made by Kuwahara. Probably distributed through a retail chain store somewhere. It's a complete bike & upgradable to modern parts. So, probably worth at least $75.

K is not part of the serial number format for Kuwahara manufactured road bike frames in the 1970s.

Some Kuwahara manufactured BMX bikes start with a K.

I concur. No one searches CL looking for a Tigre, so ZERO demand. Bike needs new rubber and an overhaul due to age.

I would be a bit higher at $100 so as presented if everything is in good working order. As for the K in the serial number or on the BB it doesn't stand Kuwahara or Kawamura, based on the many bikes I have seen and the well known SS numbers and manufacturing codes I have seen. It indicates the bicycle was made as a contract build for the American market so you actually find it somewhere in the SS # or on the BB on a lot of the 70's Japanese built bikes.
