Honestly I found it pretty worthless - you posted a few brands everyone knows about, and which are predominately no longer built in Italy.

You posted some hyperbole with minimal actual information.

Written for a general audience I think.
The crowd here will be pretty tough on anything not absolutely factual.

I think it's an attempt to reconnect with the feelings of the history, not the actual.
There are a few "workshops" that still make bikes in Italy that can be traced back to the older ways.
Not many, and fewer without interruption.

I'd love to see a place with actual information on older Pinarellos; there is very little out there on them prior to tje 80s. How many were sub k'd? Who built what and in what numbers? Etc.

I am sending in a reply a little late in the game, but might be of interest. First, I believe Moser is still manufacturing bikes, but are they actually building the frames? I don't know. I have contacted recently the Ronchini and Berardi shops, and have gotten information and decals about early frames, but Berardi hasn't manufactured bikes for over 30 years. I don't know whether Ronchini does at this time. Gios made steel frames into the 2010's, and Pelizzoli (Giovani and family) was making frames, Giovani himself making the steel frames by hand within the last 5 years or so in house.

Thanks for the input jbc. Many people think these small Italian companies shutdown decades ago, but many are still out there. Unfortunately, many are pretty much bike shops, selling other brands, but not manufacturing, and or farming out frame production to Taiwan, Asia; especially with the carbon frames. Most only do custom orders for steel frame construction, eg. Pelizzoli. Here's a photo or 2 from past Italian manufacturers. G. TURCI, CHIEMENTIN, BERARDI, VICINI; and I'm sure I have some others.

Giuseppe Marinoni is Italian by birth, but lives and makes Marinoni bikes on Montreal, Canada. He did, however, set the over-75 hour record of 35.8 km in Italy, while his over-80 hour record of 39 km was accomplished in Canada.

And some extremely nice bikes came out of his shop. I have had people insist that the Marinoni is an Italian made steed. Yes, made by someone who was/is Italian but the bikes were built in Canada...



Fiori is another example of an Italian sounding name but the bikes were of Asian origin, good enough bikes, but not Italian...


I believe they were made in Japan but assembled in Canada...

It is a shame that so many bike builders are no longer in business. I suspect many were just very local enterprises, serving just a town or community. Many more were run out of business by aluminum efforts and then mass produced carbon from asia. Of the few makers that still offer handmade steel frames, I wonder how many of those actually make them as opposed to having Barco make them to be rebranded as their own. I'm pretty certain that the Cinelli XCR is made by Barco because of some design features that are unique to Barco. But, what about the Cinelli Supercorsa? Or, Colnago Master? Wilier Superleggera? De Rosa Neo Primato or Nuovo Classico? Basso Viper? Bianchi L'Eroica? And many more. Barco claims to build steel frames for 20 other companies who just slap their decals and perhaps paint on a Barco made frame.

I love Italian handmade steel bikes. I have a carbon Wilier that I stopped riding in favor of my 40ish year-old Simoncini that I had fitted for me a long time ago when both it and I were new. It is not a famous frame and is made from Columbus SL instead of SLX which was the best/lightest back then; and, it is sort of heavy, but it sings when I ride it. It rides a lot lighter than it weighs. My new Cinelli Supercorsa is a little lighter and has new Campy SR group and nice wheels; it sings very well too. I have great hopes for my Barco XCr TIG welded frame with SS fork that is almost finished. It has a 59 cm seat tube and will weigh in about 18-1/2 lbs which is very close to what my carbon Wilier weighs. I'm keeping the weight down with Campy SR 12 x 2 group with direct mount brakes and a lot of WR Compositi components, handmade in Italy (they also make parts for Ferrari and Lamborghini.) The wheels will be HED Belgium Plus with White Industries T11 hubs and Vittoria Corsa Control tubeless tires. At my age, it will be the Italian stealth bomber of the geriatric set.

When I lived in Italy I had a G. Bianchi (Giuseppe Bianchi), made in Florence, now Beta Motorcycles. As far as I know, they don't make bicycles anymore.

I love how this thread started as what might have been thinly-veiled advertising and detoured into an interesting session on boutique Italian builders.

I think it's been a very long time since Cinelli actually produced the Supercorsa. It was a well known 'secret' that from sometime in the mid 90s until around 2008 they were made by Losa. I don't know who makes them now but I can't imagine that the production was brought back in-house. I have read a post elsewhere, by someone who spent a lot of time in Italy, that the Colnago Masters have been built by a subcontractor for several years.

But even back in the heyday of Italian steel there were subcontractors making bikes for other companies. This is a post from Richard Sachs on another forum. Note that he specifically mentions Cusano Milanino, which is home of De Rosa.

Wildwood 

If I could only own bikes from one Country, it would be Italy. And not all racer type bikes. Old Italian men who ride bikes, drink good red wine, laugh with their buddies, and sing after dinner are fun to be around. Guess those old guys don’t all have to be Italian.
