Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I remembered to stock up on catfood but not dogfood(Costco). Guess I'll have to get some locally. I've discovered, recently, that they all like tortillas. Hell can freeze over and there will still be fresh tortillas available.

Not in MN. I wouldn't have expected a run on tortillas, but they were one of the items that went first, along with eggs and pasta/sauces. Even the fancy, local, small-batch organic ones were snapped up. I had all of the makings for burritos and had to wait for the shelves to re-stock, and even then I was only able to get whole wheat varieties.

consensus on tiagra? Would you guys settle for tiagra if you were buying a new bike? Comparing the 4 that i’m interested in, seems there all priced around the same between 2200 to 2800 for 105, but if I settled for tiagra, I could get the bike for 1450 to 1800.
Is there a huge difference between 105 and tiagra?
Is it something I would have to replace earlier on down the road where the 105 would last longer?

Realistically with me being back at work my average monthly miles will probably drop to 250 or less. And I would like something that will last atleast a year before I even have to utter the word bike shop or parts.

I went out first thing this morning to get an 8 pound bag of bird seed at Ocean State Job Lot, a discount store, for the birds that live and carouse in a small patch of woods behind my apartment. To my surprise, I was able to score two rolls of TP.

So far the schools, colleges and library are boarded up but other than that, social distancing is the main deterrent to contagion. I feel for lower paid workers who with the slowdown of economic activity are having a hard time making ends meet. I joked in an earlier post about using a stimulus check to buy bike gear but I would rather use it in some charitable way. Suggestions?

Just for kicks, I looked at my small 401k account today. I had to go back in the statements to see roughly where the high point was at. Looks like it has lost roughly 20 percent. Oh well. I'm young enough to let that ride and see how it comes back in time.

New Tiagra is good stuff. But 105 , ultegra , D/a is even better. I would at least go with 105 personally. But Tagra is the old 105 due to trickle down tech.

So you would hold out and save the extra money to get the bike with 105? That is what I am leaning towards. Convincing the wife is the hard part. This is all hypothetical. We were able to take care of all the debt I accrued when I was out of work, and she knows I wanted to get a new bike. We just havnt agreed on cost.
I am in the mind set to spend the money one time and get exatcly what I want and to not have to worry about upgrading parts or replacing parts any time soon until something breaks.

Whether you're talking hydro disc or rim, Tiagra is definitely good and performs well. To me, the main reason to go to 105 would be 11-speed, which opens you up to compatibility/better selection with the Ultegra and DA parts out there, whether you're talking consumables (chains, cassettes) or if something breaks and needs replacing down the line (RD, shift lever). You also get the additional cog, which is nice, but that alone is not worth the price premium, IMO.

To a certain extent, the more you spend the more, or less (weight) you get. The more you get sucked into the roadie world life style the more you will want.
As it happens, you dont know what you want until you can figure out what you dont want. Aim as high as you can then go a little bit higher. You wont regret better equipment.

Lots of people are starting to work from home. Almost all upper level staff aside from el presidente are now working remotely.

We were told that due to the large number of government contracts we have that our facility will stay open unless something really significant happens, so I will still be coming into work every day.

Thinking through it, this is what I would prefer to happen. I'm not good at working from home, and it will give me something to do to get out of the house. Plus, right now all work from home is happening for an indeterminate time period. It might be a couple weeks or could maybe stretch longer. I feel like taking that step is one that you can't take back, so once you're home then you're home until everything is determined to be okay.

One of my wonderful postdocs is flying home to Italy next week to take care of family. She's a smoker. I am worried about her and made her promise to cut back.
