Lifetime miles question

I have an interesting question for us old fellows at this awhile. I am a long distance runner and that really is the background I come from. I still run but age and runner's dystonia make that much more challenging. I have always ridden and bike and used it through most of my running years. Runners keep a log an most serious ones can tell you lifetime miles or a good estimate. I can running and even on the bike give pretty reasonably close mileage.

So what sort of lifetime miles do the regulars here have on the books? I still have way more running miles that cycling miles but at present rate Lord willing. I will catch up. I post mine of any are curious, maybe no gives a rats ass too. Cycling is a bit more challenging to keep track off. I have manage 84,000 miles running over now 42 years. On the bike I am around 50,000 with most of them in the past 8 years.

This is my one regret for not really keeping track of this stuff.

But estimating my yearly mileage from my commuting (easy to estimate) and weekends rides (likewise), I think I've gone far enough to ride to the moon (apogee) and am on my way back.

I started logging in Training Peaks in 2010 and have 68K miles. I probably had as many as that before.

I've been tracking mileage since I first bought an Avocet bike computer in 1990. Since then, I've recorded 202,000 miles (and a few more.. I would have to look it up to get the precise number).

BTW, I only count outdoor miles. The counter on Strava includes my trainer "miles", but they're not part of my tally.

Yes trainer miles never count only the time and heart rate on the trainer.............to determine beer replacement amount.

I had some Avocets back then. I'm around 200K on the road and don't know how many hours off road.

I have no idea. That stat has never interested me. Over about 40 years I'd guess I have averaged 2,000 mi/yr.

Wow.

My highest year is something a bit over 4K miles, logged.
As a kid I used to ride on a bike every second that I wasn't doing something else or resting from doing so. I rode everywhere, all day long in the summertime...and a heck of a lot of it was on a 20" BMX bike. Could straight faced say we were putting in 60+ miles, almost on the daily in summer with good weather. I recall going through several sets of tires in the summer. Always rotated front to back and probably did about a set a month or more. The funny part is that I cannot recall actually EVER wearing out a chain or sprocket...or at least coming to the realization that it was worn out. I may have been swapping parts too often to see it.

I fooled around with keeping track of mileage with a Huret Multito hub-mounted odometer when we first received them in the bike shop sometime in the '70s, and I used an Avocet 30 when that came out (and I still have a spare one around here somewhere, complete with mounting kit and instructions).

No idea about lifetime mileage, though it must be substantial, since I started training and racing as an ABLA intermediate around 1964 and continue to ride upwards of 12 to 16 hours per week in season. But once I started riding a mountain bike for winter training, it became obvious that keeping track of offroad mileage would be meaningless and that keeping track of hours in the saddle would make much more sense. Not that I ever did.

I only have been riding since 2014 and maybe have 30K miles max. I stopped recording my stats because of a shift in thinking that for me it is about quality and not quantity. I am more interested in a good workout and scenery than miles. A lot of wasted miles on MUPS instead of being in the canyons and mountains. Trying to make amends for my foolishness.

Been cycling seriously (as in - buying expensive bikes and gear) since ‘89. I started tracking in ‘91 and am now at a bit over 93,000. I’ve nearly doubled my mileage this past year due to a 5 day per week schedule thanks to CV. I’ve used assorted tracking methods from log books to a computer activity tracking software and on GPS for the past 6 years.

That too.

BF is full of posts of people saying some version of, "that tire/bottom bracket/hub/etc. only had xxxx miles on it before (something bad happened)". If you have multiple bikes, there's no way to know these sorts of things without a maintenance log.

Never kept enough records to know. I started in 1995 age 27 Mountain Biking then in a few years started mixing in Road Biking. In 25 years life forced me off the bikes at times but been overall consistent in the sport. Great exercise that I encourage anybody to give it a try.

227,000

I have always been intrigued by tracking miles both as motivation and a maintenance tool. Now at age 70 I am at 227,000 miles with a "new" lifetime goal of 300,000.

When you get to 300k you'll have to revise that goal.
