Much love to my Super Mongoose Delt Extreme dual compond gravel goose extreme,,,,,,she is simply the most fun and capable bike on gods green earth.
26x1.5 maybe the very best of all the gravel world.

I'm not sure that 26 inch is the "best" size for gravel grinding given all the very capable 29ers out there but 26 inch wheels are plenty capable off road as well. They were standard on MTBs back in the day and old school MTBs can make pretty capable gravel bikes.
The most capable all around bike I own is a 1993 Bridgestone XO 2 which has road geometry and is built around 26 inch tires. I use it for gravel grinding as well with 26 x 1.75 tires. Of course if you were designing a gravel bike in '93, 26 would have been your best choice. Grant Peterson called this a "fire road" bike and it works well on all sorts of different surfaces:
