Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pine Flat Road Race—Jimtown California

I’m looking for info from anyone who’s ridden this route or race. Starting in Jimtown on Pine Flat Road, at least according to my maps and Google Earth, it appears it’s not too difficult to ride to Middletown which I guess is about 35(?) miles from Jimtown.

It’s not too far from my home but far enough I’d like to see what others may know before I decide to take a ride there.

I am only aware of the one in near Pine Flat Lake in Sanger. Did it back in 1995 or 1996 and it was the same route.

The top 2 miles of Pine Flat is very steep, and I wasn't fit enough to ride the whole thing when I did it. If your gearing is low enough/fitness high enough, it's a perfectly do-able climb, especially if you don't ride all the way from Yountville to attempt it.

I haven't done Ida Clayton, but the Pine Flat/Ida Clayton loop is a not uncommon route for some of the locals around here.

The road racing forum might be more helpful.

I've done it several times, what would you like to know?

Edit: May be something different but with the same name...

This is the one I did but it's nowhere near the area you described...

[QUOTE=ummed;22826736]I've done it several times, what would you like to know?

Specifically I’m curious about establishing an “out and back” from Jimtown to Middletown. Looking at my Apple Maps it appears I simply take Pine Flat Rd to Dillingham Rd to Socrates Mine Rd to the 175 into Middletown.
Are you aware of it being that straight forward or any issues (private property/locked gates, etc…) and can you venture a guess as to the distance one way on the route I described?

Thanks !

I guess not ? Sounds like a good reason for a recon road trip.
