Impulse Buy - Make Me Feel Good

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Impulse Buy - Make Me Feel Good

I've had an Edge 510 for several years that's now a little long in the tooth.

So I impulse-bought a new Edge 830 online that arrives today.

Seeking retroactive affirmation that the device is awesome – so much better than the beleaguered 510 – and I that I made a fantastic decision.

Poo-pooers not invited.

yea the 510 was kinda the worst of the bunch so any of the 500/520/530 800/820/830 will be better IMO

The Garmin 830 is awesome. You won't need our affirmation. The 830 is its own affirmation.

On the other hand, my 1030 died mid-ride today and wouldn’t restart.

82% charge at death. Seems to be a somewhat common problem according to the Garmin forums.

I bought the 510 within weeks of it coming out and have loved it. Mine is ticking along fine and I have had none of the supposed issues with the touchscreen that so many seem to have. But obviously I am in the minority. Still use it on all my outdoor rides. I have also used it on something like a 10 hour day misadventure a few years back and the battery held fine the entire time.

The 830 is on my list of future purchases, specifically because I dig the 510 touchscreen so much.

I have an Edge 500 that I have been using since 2012 and it still works well. I often prefer it over my 820 for rides where I don't need navigation. My 820 on the other hand was fantastic for a trip I took to France in 2018. The trip organizer provided us with 20 different rides to do in the area which I downloaded into the 820. This came in handy for days when I didn't want to do the longer rides that the others(we were a group of 20) were doing that day. It came in handy on a day when I became separated from the group on a 120 km ride. The only downside of the 820 is the shortish battery life

Same here, my 520 has been almost perfect and a great computer. I so want to upgrade but with it running so well I have yet succumbed to temptation.

I have played with the 830 of my mates and its pretty sweet unit. I am holding out for a 1030 next though. I am going to go all out!! Besides I am old and can't see crap anymore like I used to so I want that larger screen.

I had and used an 800 for almost a decade. I'd still be using it, if it hadn't been stolen. The battery didn't hold as much charge after many years, but still more than I needed.

Now I use a Garmin watch. Like it even more.

Don't have the 830 but I just bought myself a 530 just set it up last night. I got it mainly because I've just started using TrainingPeaks and wanted to be able to take my workout rides outside once in awhile. The good news both the Edge 530/830 have been out for 6+ months already so hopefully many of the usual Garmin early bugs are worked out. On paper the _30 series have excellent feature sets, fingers crossed they deliver.

So enjoy your 830! if you're not signed up I recommend joining the Garmin Forums for troubleshooting and questions.

Funny enough, I was just wondering about Garmin "support" for the 510 I'm still rocking. They revamped the Garmin forums and the 510 forum doesn't even exist anymore. Hilarious.

So yesterday I sold the 510.

Today I took that money and doubled down on a new Varia UT800 and RTL510.

Quite the adrenaline rush... Whew!

Is it a good buy?

You did well. I have the 530 and I am loving it. I chose it, over the 830, because I don’t like touch screen.

You will love the 830.

Same here! In fact my 520 even went through the wash and came out without issue. Of course now that I've written this/said this out loud, my 520 will probably give me nothing but problems...

As an aside I bought Mrs. NoWhammies the 530 for Christmas. I am interested to see how the 530 compares to my 520 in action this summer.

So wait, how much did you get for the 510? I didn't imagine there would be huge demand for it.

I thought the requirement was that the “whether it is a good buy?” question cannot be asked until after the return window closed! #41ier

I was not a fan of Garmin after a friend kept reporting 2 miles less distance than I did because they do not know that climbing increases distance and they only read GPS (2 dimensional) distance. Since that ride was only 25 miles I can imagine what it would be like on some of my ides that ae 50 miles and half of them are climbing and he other half descending.

Depends on if you get Bluetooth disconnections which cause the Varia radar alerts to stop working, which is what made me move from 520 to Wahoo.

One of the original 520 owners here. the ole gal's battery was starting to fail me so I was looking for a new unit. Looked at the Wahoos but the Garmins still offered a few features that I knew I really wanted.

I then vacillated between the 530 and the 830. Most of the reviewers I trust seemed confident that the 830 was priced too high relative to the 530.

Well Santa made the decision for me and all I can say is that IMO those reviewers were wrong. The 830 is a solid, reliable bike computer and the added functionality of the touchscreen along with the heatmap-informed, on-the-fly routing (and re-routing) is easily worth the added cost.

I think you're gonna be very please with the upgrade
